Syawal in Penang : Over the New 2nd Penang Bridge

mr. khairul’s mom is from langat. and his bapak has a thick perak accent. so where did that penang accent come from the way he speaks? well mr khairul was born and raised in penang – so while all his other siblings seem capable of speaking with a perak accent, mr khairul is utagha through and through.

on that note, that is why it’s like mandatory for us when we come back to malaysia from dubai, to visit his old playground – the penang island.

IMG_2890

the boys were super excited. this was their first ever ferry trip and even more fun to share this momentous occasion with their atuk.

IMG_2893

of course, a trip to penang is incomplete without enjoying a plate of nasi kandar at his favorite spot - ‘line clear’. me, i don’t understand the obsession with nasi kandar. it’s basically just curry and fried chicken. so? haha but the magic is in the curry campoq, and the crispy crunch special flour-marinated fried chicken. i cant remember having nasi kandar while growing up – i only ate it more often since married to this penang boy!

IMG_2902IMG_2910

my sis-in-law with her scrumptious plate of nasi kandar. mr. khairul loves it so much! no time for selfies or pictures! dig in!

 IMG_2904 IMG_2916

this is also a must-stop. chendul teochew – soft fat beads of green cendol, in a pool of cool coconut milk with a drizzle of gula melaka. heavenly when you slurp it on a hot day, especially after a huge mountainous plate of nasi kandar! that’s khaleef in 2014, and that’s us in 2005 with the family friend tato.

went to penang by ferry, went back to kg lalang through the new 2nd penang bridge or its official name, ‘the sultan abd halim muĆ”dzam shah bridge’ (the sultan of kedah, and the reigning yang dipertuan agong). totalling 24 km in length, it will take motorists around 20 minutes to cross the RM4.5 billion bridge from batu kawan on the mainland and batu maung on the island. it is the longest bridge in southeast asia!

Rope-Walking & Swing on Trees @ ESCAPE Teluk Bahang, Penang

if you ever need a place filled with trees you can swing from, tight rope where you tread from trees to trees, buildings to climb, tower to jump from, dark rabbit hole to explore – ESCAPE to adventureland teluk bahang in penang.

and yes, you can be 4 or 34 years old and doing this. it’s like all the things you reminisce about doing when you were a kid – you can realize it here at ESCAPE adventureland teluk bahang, penang.

there is something similar to this in dubai, at the mall near oasis center I think – but it’s INSIDE a mall. at ESCAPE adventureland teluk bahang, you get to do it surrounded by trees and clear blue sky.

IMG_6563

so we went last syawal, while back in malaysia. it’s surprising that penang boy mr. khairul didn’t know about this place until now. we were greeted with this pretty resort-like entrance and its signature grass-roof building. beyond it, we could see tall towers with tight rope and obstacles – and people treading carefully on them!

quite a sight. khaleef was excited just like his king-scout dad. me, not so much. haha.

IMG_6566

we can see people doing balancing act on the ‘monkey business’ where people walk through various obstacle course from pole to pole – with three levels of height!

IMG_6569

haha. good one!

* * *

IMG_6575

huge park - with so many monkeying around to do! you can see from the map how big the whole park is – even when you’re NOT climbing up or jumping down, you’d still sweat and burn fat as you walk around the whole park, enjoying the greeneries, fresh air and sight of people screaming haha. this is better than legoland!

* * *

IMG_6576

this is the ‘gecko tower’ – a wall-climbing made more interesting because instead of the usual colorful protruding rocks for people to hold on to as they climb, this one is built like a normal apartment. the trick is to use the bars on windows, the net, or the wooden planks on the wall, to propel you to climb further up. totally cool and creative way to spice things up.

IMG_6588

there’s khaleef in action! he can climb so fast! a natural! you notice that there is a clock right on top to time your climb, making it more challenging.

IMG_6595

“we survived!” khaleef and his aunty ya (my youngest sis-in-law sofia) after a successful climb! you can see that they’re wearing safety harness and proper hard hat. after they climb together, khaleef took another turn with bapak pulak! sofia said it’s much, much harder than it looks!

* * *

IMG_6600

this is the ONE thing that can appeal to younger kids – the ‘tots trail’ where kids have fun climbing, crawling, balancing in this fun obstacle course. there’s a net, a circular tube to crawl into, a line of rubber tires – plus many other fun obstacles. big kids can try this one too, but for the younger kids like 5 yrs below like kazim, this is probably the ONLY thing that they can enjoy in this park. the rest of the activities are designed for older kids and adults.

IMG_6602

it’s TOTALLY fun even looking at them from below as they squeezed and treaded along the many different obstacle courses; pretending to be a soldier or a superhero escaping from villains.

IMG_6608

too bad I didn’t catch him on video, but kahfi was SO FAST! surprisingly so agile and fast-moving! their aunty ya sofia was gaining, while big bro khaleef had to slow down many times to help motivate the skeptical kazim. kazim had trouble trusting the ropes and nets, so a few times I had to stand right underneath them to ease kazim into walking pass it.

* * *

IMG_6622

you can even have picnic here after working up a sweat in those fun activities. take a break and continue playing! speaking of taking a break, there are many stalls here selling food and drinks – no worries.

IMG_6628

want to have money on you but not sure where to keep the coins and ringgit without them falling off as you swing from tree to tree? the park provide you with a CARD – just load the card with cash and then simply swipe whenever you buy stuff. so around the ESCAPE park you only need to carry that one card.

IMG_6632

believe me, you need a whole lot of big mineral water bottles and tons of ice-cream after spending a day at the park!

* * *

IMG_6635

this is another dare-devil 'activity' called 'atan's leap' which is similar to bungee jumping. mr. khairul has done the actual bungee jumping while studying in the states so this was no biggie. what surprises me was that his little sister sofia tried that one too! that’s HER in the picture jumping off ‘atan’s leap’! I could never do it – bravo sofia!

* * *

1377311_10151929890423308_200910495_n

later on khaleef and his dad and aunt tried the 'flying lemur', and 'tarzan's rope' – similar to flying fox.

that’s my youngest sis-in-law swinging! look how far she is from the ground that you can’t even see it!

* * *

IMG_6651

finally, khaleef and his bapak went for ‘monkey business’. mr. khairul said he should’ve done this earlier because this activity took a lot of time to complete. better get THIS over and done with first thing when you come here, ok! there are 3 levels – 3rd level is the highest! "suitable for monkeys of all ages," on their website haha.

IMG_6652

kahfi relaxing underneath all the obstacle courses. we can see them doing the ‘monkey business’ from below.

IMG_6661

khaleef, I must say – is a natural. he’s fast, he didn’t hesitate and he’s also so calm. he really enjoyed the whole experience. truly a product of a king’s scout mr. khairul. confirm tak dapat dari mak yg kaki bangku haha.

IMG_6664

* * *

IMG_6656

throughout the park there were also chickens running around freely, giving it a nice kampung feel. here’s kahfi at the geese enclousure. they were so close to him that he could touch them!

IMG_6658

while waiting for bapak, anong khaleef and aunty ya to finish their ‘monkey business’, kahfi and kazim tried the 'zoom bug' – a human-powered go-kart.

nampak fun gile but kazim had difficult time maneuvering. kahfi was fast though. he got onto that thing and rode off as if he’d done this a million times. the 'zoom bug' is right underneath the 'monkey business' so while the younger brothers were racing, they could see (and wave) their dad, bro and aunt treading precariously from the ropes above!

many thanks to the insightful mr. khairul, our boys got to sweat and play at ESCAPE Adventureplay at teluk bahang, penang. they got to swing from trees to trees, climb it, jump from it, walk on tight rope, go into 'caves' and scale the highest tower – all surrounded by nature.

there are a many more activities than the ones I put here. visit their official website ESCAPE adventureland for more information.

it’s a fantastic place to do a lot of physical activities, work up a sweat and get some healthy fun family time. definitely great for friends in huge groups too!

IMG_6624

haha.

one of the posters found in its gift shop. coolness.

leave your stress at the office, leave your worrries by the sink, stop the traffic jam, switch off your phones – ESCAPE adventureland, at teluk bahang, penang. we’re already thinking of making this an annual event for our boys!

Kuey Teow : Sany @ Penang & Mali’s Corner @ Taman Medan, PJ

i LOVE kuey teow!

these are two of the places i tried recently : one, on our trip to penang. and another one was recommended by my little bro-in-law right in PJ.

* * *

everytime we go to penang, we surely meet up with my in-law’s family friend, a childhood buddy to the kids – muhaidi, or fondly called ‘tato’ – don’t ask!

he wanted to take us for a kuey teow yummy time at kuey teow gagak, (read my review here) but it’s closed! so he took us to the next best thing – kuey teow sany near ‘tokong ular’. it’s just a humble little stall, but cooks up delicious dishes inside!

DSC08624

omg. even looking back it this picture now (i’m already back in dubai) i’m salivating! i want a plate of kuey teow now! hihi.

but there was one funny incident while we’re at kuey teow sany. you see, CHAR KUEY TEOW is kuey teow basah with gravy, and PRAWN. i don’t like prawn, so i asked the the kuey teow man to make my kuey teow with chicken instead, and also DRY.

his reply : “nih pertama kali dengaq org nak kuey teow taruh ayam nih. sat naaa..” and he proceeded to shout out my request to the cooks at the back in such a way that i was like a freak for asking such a ridiculous alternative for their original char kuey teow. haha. even tato was smirking at the incident.

DSC08621

..and here’s MY plate of kuey teow – just the way i like it! kuey teow kering taruh ayam – dry kuey teow noodle with chicken instead of prawn! and i unashamedly ordered the BIG plate! pinggan besaq!

mr. khairul with ‘little bro’ tato, our designated host in penang. thanks for your time, bro!

* * *

when we were back in KL, my youngest bro-in-law asrar took us to ‘mali’s corner’ at taman medan, jalan klang lama. they serve delicious kuey teow, and nasi lemak kukus too (steamed glutinous rice).

this place is arguably THE place to get good char kuey teow in the klang valley – we’ll see!

543535_10150795024168308_535433307_9810435_983662215_n

again, i requested DRY-style kuey teow with chicken instead of prawn, but they don’t have cut-up chicken so i had the kuey teow as it is. mr. khairul was the happiest since i passed all my prawns to him! this is as tasty as a plate of kuey teow gets. and i’m sure it would be more perfect with my chicken bits!

this is the original version : char kuey teow basah, with prawns. mine looks more delicious! haha.

mr. khairul with little bro asrar.

we got the nasi lemak kukus too for the boys. delicious, panas-panas!

mali’s corner is just a couple of stalls selling kuey teow and nasi lemak, but both the dishes were really tasty. however, nothing beats the real thing in penang!

now i really, really, really want char kuey teow! *pull hair*

Penang Trip : Stayed at MoonTree47, 1920 Shoplot!

old story, but the memory remains fresh!

i can’t even begin to describe this wonderful trip. this is our FIRST trip together without the boys since forever. we left the boys with my in-laws – ALL OUR THREE boys – and headed to PENANG for a one-night trip.

i don’t have to worry about packing diaper bags. no shouting out my kids’ names every 2 seconds. no strollers to push. no cutting out a shopping outing short because one of them throws a tantrum. we went for nasi kandar at 3am, and midnight movies too – no boundaries!

i love my kids, but this brief *freedom* was just priceless. you guys understand, right mommies?

..and because we were holidaying without our kiddos, mr. khairul the adventurous traveller decided to go unconventional and booked us a room at ‘moontree47’ – a homestay situated in a traditional penang shophouse – built in the 1920s!

(believe me, if we were with the kids, i would insist on the typical 4-5 star hotels across penang. space, comfort and housekeeping! however, since it’s just the two of us – anything goes!)

it’s in georgetown, in between some other charming homestays as well. ‘moontree47’ takes its name from the street name – muntri street. smart, eh? the concept of ‘moontree47’ is 3-fold – a homestay, a cafe, and an art gallery too!

this is the sight that greets you once you enter ‘moontree47’ – vintage furniture give a sudden feel of stepping back in time! really reminded me of my opah’s house in teluk intan!

personally, i was overwhelmed with the sight of the antic collections of 50 year old dumex dinner set, the old cameras, black and white photographs on the wall and many more vintage items.

* * *

‘moontree47’ also has a cafe, serving drinks and sandwiches. the coffee corner is nice and clean too, with orders stuck to a thread with cloth pins. cute.

the seating is very lepak too. just wooden benches, wooden stools, and another few vintage furniture. this area is like a courtyard, so you’ve got plenty of sunshine in a very comfy setting, amidst greeneries. simple, yet positively pretty!

the morning after, i hung out here to use the wi-fi, and the general feel was really relaxed. i was surprised at the song-choice – classics by sinatra and the gang reverberated through the air while i blog at that quirky little homestay. nice. should’ve ordered a cup of hot choc or something!

154496_10150806286108308_535433307_9834035_1396921698_n

* * *

now let’s check out our room for the night!

the owner, dickie led us past the cafe at the courtyard, through a backdoor and to this front door. really quirky setting – transporting me back to homes in kampung or old penang!

no view, no doorbells nor key-cards – but i just can’t wait to see what’s in store for us at this charming little homestay in georgetown!

open the door, and i saw this – another vintage sofa, with old-dulang with classic flower pattern. but it’s the stairs that captured my attention the most! the first thing on my mind was – MY BOYS definitely CANNOT be in this room, climbing those precarious-looking stairs! haha.

our homestay ‘room’ at ‘moontree47’ turned out to be a double-storey unit. the ground floor is a rather spacious area to put our luggage and what-not. the bathroom is there too on the ground floor. there’s also an old-looking cupboard that both of us recognized as belonging to our opah! hihi. THAT old-looking.

i just love that the place is so simple, with minimal amenities, but big on ideas and decor using simple items too that looked great.

checking out the room upstairs took real guts as i had to slowly climb up the stairs! man, never in a million years have i thought i’d be experiencing staying at a place like this! fun, exciting, new, and unique!

upstairs is just a really small, tight space for this double bed, and just enough space to walk around it. simple but has a cosy feel to it too. really a backpackers’ room! it’s air-conditioned, and even has a sun-roof – which was really awesome! hihi. i also love the sweet kelambu over the bed!

the cool sun-roof!

the classic wooden windows – cute!

there are some reviews at some websites saying that the walls were too thin that they can hear people coughing and all – well, if you want real sound-proof room, go to a proper hotel lah! you get what you pay for, right?

but for us, the only other unit that’s occupied was the one at the front. yang kat belakang ni, kami je yang stay. so the night can be REALLY quiet…

haven’t seen this flask for so long! a nice touch, to add to the retro feel.

* * *

mr. khairul with one of the owners – dickie. a nice guy, friendly and helpful too.

overall, our experience staying at ‘moontree47’ was a pleasant one, and it serves all our purpose – a clean bathroom, a comfy room, a pretty ambiance and even a wi-fi at the cafe. all the vintage stuff and retro feel are a bonus.

wanna check out ‘moontree47’ on your next visit to penang? walk down the street from the opposite junction of cititel, pass by modern hotel on your right. walk further down and look for ‘moontree47’ on your right.

have a nice stay!

check out these postings too!
