For Teachers of the World & Cikgu Cabuk

i am a teacher, did you know that?

i’ve never been a school teacher, but i’ve been a lecturer at a hospitality college, and then a magazine editor, and then a mentor at a kids’ development center (best job in the world!). so i teach. and i know what comes with teaching. a teacher friend of mine once said, “gim, you’re teaching kids. all cutesy stuff. it’s different than teaching teenage boys.”

i agree, it’s DIFFERENT. but the challenges and obstacles are nowhere more or less. i’ve taught teenage boys and girls before. and then i’ve taught little kids. believe me, all has its ups and downs, highs and lows.

..but i love each teaching moment!

i stumbled upon a blog once, belonging to a TEACHER. when she wrote about her job, she simply wrote : “cikgu cabuk aje.”

CIKGU CABUK.

this, coming from a teacher. i don’t know whether to be angry, or to cry. or to lower my head in shame for this fellow educator who is belittling this noble profession; her OWN profession. why the heck are you a teacher in the first place?!

be PROUD that you are a teacher. because god knows you’re doing so much more than just teaching. you’re touching people’s lives. you’re moulding young minds. you’re inspiring future leaders.

i dedicate this to cikgu cabuk, may you LEARN something today.

When I Grow Up I Wanna Be Happy

1. my books
2. my tissue and stirrer collection
3. my blog
4. my olympus
5. my my my, there's too many!
   

5 activities that make me happy:

1. baking - mak said it's like my therapy session
2. grocery night out with mr. khairul and the boys
   
3. watching my boys sleep
4. kitchen wiped, floor scrubbed, and laundry done!
   
5. when i eat chocolates - or that other thing >snicker<

5 moments that make me happy:

1. when i travel with abah and my sisters
2. the day he said, "aku terima nikahnya.."
3. my working days @ e.l
4. when i gave birth to my boys
5. the conversations i've had with mak

Quirky Lessons For My Boys

people say 'no man is an island'
actually every man is an island.
it's just that, once in awhile, hold parties, or dinner dates
invite people to your 'island' when you feel like it
otherwise, enjoy your time alone.
it's ok.

appreciate nature and notice the littlest thing around you.
the shape of the cloud or the lines in the sand as you walk by.
a pebble in your shoe.
ants in a row.
bees buzzing.
trees swaying.

(but it's ok to spray the flies in our house coz it's driving mak crazy!)

let your eyes be your guide, but ask your heart for the answers.
if you can't find in any
there's always me.
or google.

(but never go ask bapak for advice on girls)

the world is a sea of opportunities
and don't worry
i will always be your float
or your banana boat.

never turn your back on someone, you never know when you might need them
unless you're leaving a room
in which case walking backwards is a weird option.

it's okay to monkey around once in a while.
everybody needs time to be goofy.
just not in public.

finally, my son
keep your feet on the ground..
