Malinja Kuey Tiaw @ Puchong Prima

i LOVE kuey teow.

okay, i know it’s ramadhan and posting about food is either frowned upon, or salivated on! haha. enjoy je lah! for me, one of the best places to get fried kuey teow is in this humble stall in puchong prima – the malinja charkuetiaw.

if you ever came across this part of town, let me tell you that there is a long stretch of stalls, so be on the lookout for the name ‘malinja’.

this is our kueyteow haunt for the last few years when we stayed in puchong. coming home from work, it’s always nice to know that there is a kuey teow place that i can count on – one that i know would serve a most delicious plate of kuey teow.

there is one other kuey teow stall here but i’m not sure if it’s the same stall (paint different) or another stall at the same stretch. tapi memang kat puchong prima jugak!

however, during our recent visit, proved to be quite disappointing for mr. khairul who loves his char kuey teow basah (with gravy). he said the gravy was thick – but suspiciously thick – as if they put a little too much corn flour. this affects the taste. jadi tak best!

mine, was the kuey teow ‘kering’ – dry fry – and it was still as delicious as ever! in fact, it was less oily. loved the silky thin strips of flat noodle, loved the not-too-spicy taste, loved the whole thing! it’s still the best for me!

ulp. even i’m salivating now…

i don’t eat kerang nor prawns so i requested a change to chicken. THIS is one of my favorite plates of kuey teow.

is it open for buka puasa? *wink wink*

Sundanese Food @ Anggrek Kuring

it was the last day in malaysia before we fly off back to dubai. i had lunch with my in-laws. we wanted to try something malaysian, but ended up in ‘indonesia’ – for nasi padang!

we headed on to the ‘anggrek kuring’, a sundanese-indonesian restaurant in puchong. i will tell you right now that i highly recommend this place if you wanna try our neighbour’s dishes. all of us left tummy-full and very satisfied! great food, nice ambiance and courteous, always-smiling staff.

furthermore this restaurant was officially opened by the indonesian ambassador to malaysia – how cool is that? confirm duta ni takkan selamba-selamba je nak rasmikan restoran yg sajikan makanan tak sedap kan? kan?

where is it?

to me there’s way TOO MANY shoplots in puchong now, but it’s fairly easy to find ‘anggrek kuring’. it’s situated in bandar puteri puchong. just look for the ‘giant’ at bandar puteri. there’s a few rows of shoplots there. then look for CIMB at one corner (you will definitely see it from the main road) turn towards the CIMB, but go to the end of that shoplot. if you see ‘maybank’ on your right, the restaurant is right opposite ‘maybank’.

look up, because the restaurant is actually on the first floor, so you have to go up the stairs. don’t be fooled by the fact that it’s not on the main floor – when you reach 1st floor and open the door, a distinct sound of angklung will greet you!

i love it!

in fact, throughout our lunch, an angklung medley of classical indonesian songs are played over the speaker. it sets the mood just right for a great indonesian meal that’s coming.

there’s even a water fountain at one corner, where you can hear the soothing sound of flowing water. pair that up with that lovely angklung sound, playing gently in the background – you’ve got one beautiful ambiance there!

the bamboo chairs looked so exotic – but hard on my bum la! they don’t want customers to linger izzit? haha.

the lightings are cozy and soothing like the angklung sound, accompanied by trellises of green grass along the ceiling. simple. comfy. cozy.

the tables are covered with the typical indonesian orange-yellow-brown batik, adding to the sunda scene.

how was the food?

you’re spoilt with choices – so many types of chicken and beef dishes, seafood and soups. these plus so many others too. and they all looked so delicious in the pictures on the menu.

i like it when there are huge pictures of the food in the menu, along with numbers that coordinate with the name of the dishes. it makes it so much easier for me to pick and choose, and imagine the taste of the dishes by looking at the pictures!

the nasi putih was served in a lovely woven container. it’s layered with banana leaves so you can smell the fragrance of hot, steamed white rice!

even the plate was eye-catching! it’s also made from the same woven rattan, with paper and banana leave on top. nak makan pun rasa seronok!

for vegetable dish, we ordered kangkung belacan, and tauhu tauco. the kangkong belacan is fresh, and fried just right as to preserve its crunchiness.

though i’m not a fan of tauhu, i do love the taste of kuah tauco – so this dish was alright for me too.

as for the main dishes, we opted for ayam bakar and kalasan, and sapi ladi hitam (black pepper). i LOVE these two dishes. the ayam bakar was so juicy, marinated to perfection!

i usually don’t prefer any black and pepper dish, but this sapi lada hitam was so delicious! i think they don’t use too much of black pepper, so the taste was just right. also, i guess they used pounded black pepper to give it a more delicious black pepper taste, rather than pedas tak tentu pasal!

another must-try at ‘anggrek kuring’ is the sotong goreng tepung, or ‘cumi’. fresh squid, chopped, dipped in batter and deep-fry until crispy. seerved with a string of mayonnaise on top. chomp chomp!

i also ordered sup buntut – which is actually an indonesian beef oxtail soup, okay! but what an ‘attractive’ name, yes? haha. served hot, with the perfect saltiness. excellent.

we also ordered the ‘standing fish’ – yes! the fish was deep-fried and shaped in such a way that it’s standing erect on the plate! some sundanese restaurant calls this dish the ‘dancing fish’ – maybe because they couldn’t get the fish to stand up! hihi.

the fish – like all the other dishes – were served fresh and looked so enticing to the taste buds! the flesh was soft, and the outer parts crispy. an excellent sundanese dish.

this set of dishes comes with complimentary drinks – we got iced lemon tea, and iced honey lime. a sweet-sour thirst quencher!

cendol es

another complimentary bit – the dessert. after the waitress cleared our table, out came bowls of ‘cendol es’ – which is cendol le.

but then again, it’s actually different that what malaysians are used to – there’s very little gula melaka – so little, that when you stir and stir, it will not turn light brown! hihi. and it’s more lemak. other than that, it’s the same.

sedap!

the sundanese are the 2nd largest ethnic group in indonesia, and they’re well-known to be sweet-tempered, and soft-spoken – much like the waiters and waitresses here. they’re courteous, and always with a smile. they helped us picked the best dishes, and explained what certain words mean.

i did enjoy my experience eating at this sundanese restaurant.

and if you as me about their food – it’s excellent. do try any sundanese dishes near you! i think ‘anggrek kuring’ has another branch in kota damansara. go!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

oh, this is kazim. we didn’t bring his stroller or bassinet – so we just pulled up a chair with cushion, propped it between my chair and my mom-in-law’s chair and dumped him there. hihi.

tengok muka tak puas hati tu! soon, ok dear boy! you’re turning 6 months soon!

Best Kuey Teow @ Kelana Jaya & Puchong

i really, really like kuey teow. and this is how i eat it. (i have a system). i get my plate of piping hot char kuey teow. i then pick up every single (and i mean, every single) strand of taugeh from the clearly visible, to those hiding behind the folds of the flat noodles. when i get that thing outta the way, my kuey teow would then be in an acceptable state of heat, (not too hot not too lukewarm) best consume by yours truly. yum!

i've been looking for a good kuey teow ever since i set foot in dubai. failed. the only decent kuey teow i tried was in 'noodle house' at madinat jumeirah. the rest are just a poor excuse to have 'flat noodles' in their menu. shame!

so back in malaysia, i can't wait to get my taste buds on a good char kuey teow, two of the best that i know off is FAM, kelana jaya and in puchong.

* * *

looks can be deceiving, and i learn this while in penang. spots for line clear nasi kandar and roti canai transfer road may be oddly situated for a place so popular with food so tasty. however, you just can't help where you find delicious yummies!

so as the case with this kuey teow spot in FAM kelana jaya. restoran berkarat but serves good food! it's a corner-lot restaurant, with blue plastics as walls, shading the stalls from the sun and heat. previously, they have long rectagular tables but now they have round tables instead.

it's simple, yet comfortable and clean. the place offers variety of hawker food such as its famous char kuey teow, soups dishes, nasi goreng-goreng, and nasi ayam.

i had sore throat so i ordered for myself milo suam and for mr. khairul, barley suam. (if i can't have iced drinks, he can't either!)

and for starters, mr. khairul ordered his fav, must-have popiah basah which has cucumber, crushed nuts (among others). i prefer popiah goreng, but i always tried just one slice of the popiah basah, just to get a feel of this dish that he loves much! i don't really fancy this dish because it goes against my policy - the amount of inti overwhelms the kulit popiah! that won't do!

my appetizer was a plate of hot freshly-fried prawn in crispy wantan crackers. dip in a mild home made chilli sauce - zesty!

mr. khairul gobbled up his char kuey teow in no time! you can ask for 'besar' or 'kecik' depending on your glutton-ness. mr. khairul like his spicy (duuh!) but since i'm still having sore throat, i was shunning fried-food (hey, didn't i just had fried wantan crackers?) and got myself a big bowl of hot kuey teow soup! slurp!

my kuey teow soup has fishballs, fishcakes, strips of chicken and spinach. pour in a lil of soya sauce with cut-up cili padi - man! my blocked nose terus dah tak block! i really am not comfortable eating soupy dish in public as i get really messy and runny (haha) but this was too good to resist. armed with tons of tissue papers, must eat!

here you pay the waitress and hawkers the moment the dish arrives so you can just enjoy your food and leave right away, without having to wait for the waiters to bring your bill after finishing your meal.

* * *

the other place is our favorite haunt after work. it boasts 'the first penang kuey teow in puchong' - which i'm not so sure about, but it really is super-delicious in my opinion.

here we always order 'kuey teow basah dengan telur mata kerbau lembik', and 'kuey teow kering takmo kerang, takmo udang taruh ayam'.

i think you can guess which dish is for which half of khairul-syigim.

this kuey teow is mine, but i got the telur mata kerbau because mr. khairul complained that the egg yolk was not runny enough! so he gave it to me, and ask the abe to make a lembik-lembik one for him. now who's the cerewet one, huh?

(the picture is before i kutip-kutip all the taugeh)

yes, it's slightly oily (which char kuey teow isn't?) but it has the right amount of salt and kicap, with the right moisture - not too kering and the flat noodles are soft and silky to the taste.

this humble stall is situated in one of the hundreds of tamans in puchong, in a long stretch of goreng-goreng stalls. so even if you don't feel like eating char kuey teow, there are tons of stalls to choose from, with tons of nasi and mee goreng-goreng to decide on.

the task is to choose a stall which has a good nasi goreng USA, or a decent tomyam or a nice daging merah. good luck and bon appetite!
