Oh My Jawi : Komik Jawi Comel

panel komik 1 : hari ni annur demam. meow jangan kacau tau.

panel komik 2 : terima kasih, meow.

panel komik 3 : orang tak pernah tuam dahi pakai kucing lah, meow…

haha. comel sangat-sangat si ‘meow’ tu! geram!

* * *

teruskan usaha martabatkan tulisan jawi, emit!

Cool Artwork & Stuff @ Gerbang Malam, Ipoh

‘gerbang malam’ is literally translated as ‘gateway of the night’. nama macam night club dalam citer p. ramlee je kan haha. this name refers to a ‘night market’ in the ipoh town, which is like our usual pasar malam, only without the food. the stalls there offer clothing, shoes, phone accessories, and even a massage service in a small makeshift.

apart from the dramatic name, it all sounds so regular and mundane, right? but one of the stalls really captured our attention – in a really *artful* way!

IMG_9511

the ‘gerbang malam’ night market in ipoh is located at jalan tahwil azhar, along the bank simpanan nasional. you’ll recognize the stretch by its rather ‘grand’ entrance on each side, that says ‘gerbang malam’. it opens from 7pm to 2am.

IMG_9499

i was there at ‘gerbang malam’, ipoh the night after my sister’s wedding reception. i actually tagged along with my youngest sister’s buddies who came and spent the night to attend the wedding. my kiddos were with my in-laws and my husband went out with my uncles – so i was feeling rather ‘young’ and very ‘free’! *wink wink*

it was an odd mixed-feeling of relief, freedom, excitement and at the same time ‘incomplete’ – being able to just stay out very late, walking around town with a bunch of youngsters, without pushing a stroller or screaming my kids’ name every 12 seconds!

azot, dylla, bell, dot, and faiz – appreciate you guys including this 32 year old in that night outing!

no food stalls, but i noticed this supermarket trolley filled with buns, egg tarts, and some other pastries for sale. there’s even a loud-hailer on the side for the seller to welcome customers to his trolley-stall!

now THIS is the stall that captured our attention. it’s a stall that sells art – in the form of sketch portraits drawn in pencil. the ‘artist’s name is hamid if i’m not mistaken, and he’s been opening the stall in ‘gerbang malam’, ipoh for quite some time.

his portraits are bold, and beautiful in its simplicity, with attention to details – in just a pencil sketch! i know there must be tons of artists like him trying their luck at central market, KL but i was surprised to see such a unique stall in ipoh. and his drawings are really good!

from the first moment i laid eyes on his sketch of a very recognizable picture of the legendary p. ramlee playing the violin, i knew i had to buy some of his sketches for my home in dubai.

DSC08471DSC08472DSC08476DSC08480

his sketches range from popular entertainment icons like p. ramlee, kurt cobain and audrey hepburn to historical buildings in perak like the menara condong (leaning tower – yes we have a leaning tower too in perak! haha) of teluk intan to kampung houses too! all drawn in such beautiful strong strokes of the pencil.

and yes, i ended up buying ONLY two framed sketches – the ipoh railway station (which is this really gorgeous old colonial building) and a rumah kampung (village house) with coconut tree and all. i would’ve bought more but i was thinking of the weight when i want to bring it back to dubai.

from left : dot in black tudung, bell and dylla in green T. azot’s gal pals bought some for themselves too – there are small ones drawn in color – quotes, abstract drawings and even cartoon characters; drawn on thin plywood that is perfect for a keychain or just to hang on your bagpack.

my sister and her fiance faiz negotiating a bargain. i would say i got a rather reasonable price for this wonderful artwork, and would definitely come again bringing mr. khairul so that we can buy many more drawings!

the artist is the dude in blue sitting down. i wish him all the best in his endeavour to share with the world on how he sees it – through his sketches, and his pencil.

Character Day Parade : All Hail King Khaleef!

white bathrobe : 25aed
belt : 13aed
leather wrist band : 7aed

seeing your son's pride as King Khaleef? priceless.

khaleef’s school held a ‘literacy week’ where they had a lot of fun activities for the students, and parents can join in some of the activities :

  • ‘book donation day’ – the kids bring new or second hand reading books to the school
  • story telling sessions
  • poetry writing
  • drama sessions
  • debate
  • literacy quiz
  • book fair
  • ‘character day parade’ – little kids dress up as fairy tale characters, and older kids in their favorite book characters

* * *

i think i speak for all MOMS of the world, that when it comes to dressing up our kids for something like the ‘character day parade’, we are more excited than our children, kan? hihi.

i was cracking my head on what he can become – prince and kings are obvious picks, since he’s a boy, and it’s so easy to assemble. other fairy tale characters like peter pan, and the big bad wolf also came up!

mr. khairul went all semangat ketuanan melayu when he suggested khaleef came as hang tuah! just make a paper tanjak and keris, he’s good to go!

time was running out, so i settled for the typical ‘king’ look instead. i know A LOT of boys may come dressed up as kings and princes, so let’s make the crown really stands out! hihi.

i fashioned a crown from hard paper, wrapped it around with aluminium foil for the shiny effect, and to top it all – the huge diamond-shaped ‘gem stones’ made from candy wrappers.

the crown is big, bold and shiny. so even among the crowd of kiddos, it would be easy to spot khaleef!

* * *

 eager parents awaiting the ‘character day parade’ to start

there are so many interesting costumes! ben10 was a very popular choice among the boys; they had the green ben10 jacket, ben10 mask and even the ben10 alien characters. to me it’s practically cheating because the rule clearly said - ‘fairy tale characters’! ben10 bukan fairy tale. eee. main tipu. haha.

for girls, i can say that 90% went with either princess or fairies. pink, purple fluffy skirts, lacy tops and shiny crowns or silky wings. adorable!

here are the costumes which caught my eye :

an adorable indian prince, dashing zorro and this voluptuous little mermaid!

 this cool shrek boxy mask, ben10 heat blast, and the little red indian boy

another cool shrek – complete with green face paint and shrek clothings; a cute witch and little red riding hood!

* * *

and then it was time for khaleef’s class to strut their stuff in the parade! i recognized his school teacher, and the boy up front was from his class.

and then i saw the crown, bouncing out glimmer of the sun from the aluminium foil! haha.

his costume was so simple – black baju melayu, with belt and a leather wrist band to emphasize the look. i covered him with a bathrobe like a cloak, pinned together with a big ‘diamond’-studded butterfly brooch. armed with a ‘sword’, he was the coolest king ever!

ALL HAIL KING KHALEEF!

after the parade, classes resumed as usual, where a storytelling session will take place. how cute it is to have all sorts of characters sit around listening to stories.

khaleef went home by bus as usual, and surprisingly his flimsy crown is still in tact! i thought he would’ve left it in school, or it would be crushed while playing on the bus.

so i took a couple more pictures of king khaleef!

Khaleef Draws Mak

“this is mak,” khaleef said.

gulp. speechless. haha.

* * *

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

now, each time he draws orang lidi it will look like this. haha. and i will go like, “where’s his body? you have the head, the arms and the legs. where’s his body?”

  1. the first stick man on top next to his name is him, of course.
  2. the second one is me! that two sticks coming out of my head that looks like a pair of antennae is supposed to be HAIR! haha, since i’m a girl. notice my name on far right.
  3. and the last one at the bottom is bapak. haha. trying to draw him ‘driving’ tapi sempat draw steering wheel je! haha.

more arts stuff from khaleef soon!

Drawing on Facebook

i have a lot of hobbies. i love to read, i love to write, i love to sing, i love to collect – and i love to draw. found this old facebook application.

it's really cool because after you finished 'drawing' the graffiti, you can actually 'replay' the drawing, and you can see the 'brush' move on its own. memang best! just press play, and you can adjust the 'speed' of the 'brush'.

just wanna share. *smile*

* * *

drew this for my best bud niraku. do you remember?

* * *

drew this because - well, because i was hungry for some!

* * *

this is simply called, 'help'. cewah. abstrak konon. hihi.

* * *

ben10. the cheeky kid who found a watch called omnitrix that can turn him into 10 different aliens, all with different superpowers. and i have 3 boys. need i say more?

* * *

drew these down-under animals for my sister syida who was, at that time doing her masters in melbourne. should've drawn a wombat instead!

* * *

...and finally - drew this for mr. khairul. how i miss that smile...

* * *

i feel like drawing more!

Shakespeare I Love!

do you like theater? poetry? in old english? do you know an old dude named william shakespeare?

william shakespeare, born 26 April 1564; died 23 April 1616, was an english poet and playwright, widely regarded as the greatest writer in the english language.

he is often called england's national poet and the "bard of avon". his surviving works consist of 38 plays, 154 sonnets, two long narrative poems, and several other poems. his plays have been translated into every major living language and are performed more often than those of any other playwright.

~ wikipedia

i love reading shakespeare's work. sure, a huge chunk of his words are beyond my comprehension, but once i get a hang of it, it really does make sense! if you feel his language is too blah, then get a modernized, or simplified version.

trust me, you'd wanna read the stories he writes about! erm, do you like the teen movie '10 things i hate about you' starring heath ledger? the story is taken from a play by shakespeare. of course, modernized - but it's his work!

i've been in love after i was introduced to him in my literature in english class. since then, we've been 'intimate' - hihi. even in uia, my favorite course was shakespeare 101. and when i was choosing what masters degree to pursue, i noticed a 'masters in shakespeare studies' that i was really tempted to take!

my first, and remain one of my most favorite shakespeare's plays is 'macbeth'. the others would be 'twelfth night' and 'the merchant of venice'.

shakespeare, or sometimes fondly refered to as 'the bard' (bard is an old english word to describe a writer or a poet) is a great storyteller. he can narrate history, he can woo you with romance, he can make you cry with tragedy, and he can amuse you with comedy. he's like the p.ramlee of england!

* * *

truth is, i was just writing this because i stumbled upon this bit - simply the cutest 'macbeth in one minute' animation i found on the net. enjoy!
