My Nephew in TheStar Performing Action Song for Raya

my adorable nephew haqeem syahid is in an award-winning singing team in his school. it’s not just singing, it’s also a lot of movement, showing your emotion and expressing yourself through music. that’s why it’s called ‘action song’. it’s more theatrical and that’s why I LOVE it!

sigh. second child has always shown glimmer and glamour on stage…I was there once!

anyways, he was in the papers few days back -

haqeem

my nephew haqeem is in the far left, in front datuk seri dr zambry

haqeem and his teammates from SK seri ampang performed their exuberant ‘action song’ during a hari raya celebration in my hometown ipoh, for groups of orphans of ‘akademi ikatan muslimin and maahad tahfiz’ and pakcik makcik from the old folks home of ‘rumah seri kenangan indah’.

their audience also include perak mentri besar datuk seri dr zambry abdul kadir and wife.

Mandi Sungai on 3rd Syawal

while some kids their age are still goin from house to house collecting duit raya, my boys took a dip in the icy-cold river or mandi sungai on hari raya!

my boys @ air terjun batu hampar @ kampung paya lintah, padang rengas, perak

i haven’t been to any river for the LONGEST TIME.

my last memory of swimming in the river was my siblings and cousins on my mom’s side splashing in the river in kulim, kedah – my grand-uncle’s home which is right next to the river! i was barely 10 years old, i think!

the funny and wise tok njang has passed away for so long, and we haven’t been to kulim for a very long time too. however, the memory of swimming at that river remains one of the most adventurous times of my life!

20120821_18564820120821_18265320120821_184153

khaleef was ecstatic in the water, kahfi was surprisingly NOT scared of jumping into the icy-cold waters while kazim just loved splashing around. they were SO at home at the river!

* * *

we went to batu hampar, in kampung paya lintah at padang rengas. it’s a place near my in-laws’ house in kampung lalang. there’s a small stream that leads to a lovely little river that is so cold and just so refreshing!

i can safely say is kids-friendly too :

  • it’s easy to get to – you don’t have to climb huge slippery rocks to get across
  • also most importantly, it’s shallow, that even my 2-year old kazim can safely trod slowly through the flowing water at knee-high
  • the ground under the water is soft sands, and they’re not uneven so kids can easily walk without fear of toppling down
  • although there is a part where there’s raging water flowing from upstream, the rest of the water in the river is fairly calm so there’s no worry of the kids being swept downstream

this was the ‘raging waters’ from upstream that i mentioned. haha. not so raging la but boleh tahan! if you stood at the top of the stream like mr. khairul and slide downwards, it would be a very fast and bumpy ride down the icy-cold river!

20120821_185906

my mom-in-law actually cooked nasi lemak and packed up everything from the rice, sambal, crunchy ikan bilis down to the telur mata kobau and kacang too! her nasi lemak, especially her sambal was simply delicious – and was even more tantalizing when you eat it after a cool dip in the river. yum!

thanks to my sis-in-law tina for all the pretty pictures of our time at the river!

wanna go again, boys? do i really need to ask?

10 Things I Love about Raya 2012

eid mubarak everyone! selamat hari raya, maaf zahir batin. how’s everyone’s raya so far? in a nutshell – i spent 1st syawal in my hometown ipoh with abah, umi and my sisters. headed on to kampung lalang, kuala kangsar on the 2nd of syawal.

i’m rolling up 10 days of syawal in one posting. senang. eazy pizzy lemon squeazy. presenting : 10 things i LOVE about 2012 raya!

* * *

1) TAKBIR MALAM RAYA

my dad with his grandkids. minus 2 girls spending raya at their other atuk’s house

as usual, every year, the pakciks at the surau would go from house to house to do the takbir raya. this year our house is the first stop. we prepared a simple supper for them – lemang and rendang of course!

this year it was just the 3 of us sisters on the eve of syawal – me, yong and my youngest sis azi. syima was spending 1st syawal with her in-laws, and syida was spending her first raya as a wife.

* * *

2) RAYA BREAKFAST : NASI LEMAK + LEMANG & FRIENDS

yong brought nasi lemak from home in the morning of 1st syawal. i mean, raya is all about lemang, rendang, ketupat, kuah kacang and the works, but having hot freshly made nasi lemak was just so satisfying as well!

thanks yong!

* * *

3) LINE UP FOR DUIT RAYA!

this is just the cutest. my boys and my nephews and one niece lining up to get duit raya from atuk. from the head of the line is the eldest : haiqal, haqeem, khaleef, nuna, kahfi, kazim and adam.

* * *

5) NEW BROTHERS-IN-LAW

this year raya is extra special as we welcome a new member to the sharifuddin clan when my sis syida marries nash last april. this dec, we’re getting another brother in law. so double celebration!

* * *

6) FAMILY PICTURE IN KAMPUNG LALANG

spending 2nd raya at my in-law’s place in kampung lalang. i love it that my sons are still able to experience kampung lifestyle when they’re here – wooden house, icy-cold showers, chasing chickens and picking up rambutan.

8) ENJOYING DURIAN on HARI RAYA

on the way back from taiping to kampung lalang, we stopped by a DURIAN stall!

still weairng sampin, my durian-freak husband ate a whole bunch right there and then, and bought a lot more to bring home for later. i couldn’t eat any because of sore throat, but later that night my mom-in-law made pengat durian which was just indescribable. burp, alhamdulillah!

Our 3rd Aidiladha in Dubai

a short entry to wish everyone a blessed Aidiladha!

my eldest khaleef donning the mckk sampin this raya. this is the very sampin worn by his bapak during his schooldays. classic tu! following the footsteps of atuk, bapak and his pak ngah? we’ll see!

my naughty 2nd boy kahfi couldn’t keep a straight face when taking picture. lantak la mak bubuh jugak gamba yang kelam kabut ni. hoho. these days he completely refused to eat rice, but this morning he ate A LOT of lemang!

* lemang is glutinous rice cooked in bamboo with coconut milk – delicious!

my youngest prince kazim was being weird this morning as he kept wanting to wear the songkok (headgear) padehal during last eid syawal he kept pushing it away! unpredictable!

mr. khairul actually went back to malaysia for about a week, and came back with his mom’s chicken rendang. absolutely divine. i don’t know how to cook rendang, so having this means the world. when i heat it up this morning, the whole house was filled with the aroma of ‘raya’. best! thanks a bunch to my mother in law for her thoughts and effort!

* rendang is a spicy malay dish usually cooked using chicken or beef, and is an excellent partner with lemang.

bahulu! again, thanks to my mom-in-law for packin them. the whole family is a bahulu fan, so two huge packs of bahulu would probably be finished by the end of the week. if not by the end of the day. haha. the last time we went back to malaysia, my aunt cik packed a whole lot of bahulu and we ate ‘em all in one day in dubai. bahulu freaks!

*bahulu is a malay traditional sponge cake. yum!

malaysians in dubai solat hari raya at matrade office, al-shafeena building, in oud metha – this is always where we would have our annual malaysian gathering for solat aidilfitri or aidiladha. there are A LOT (really, a lot!) of malaysians in dubai but sometimes they pray with the locals and other expats at the mosques near their homes

the tables at the back are for pot luck dishes – this year there are plenty of goodies!

thanks dubai baker fida for the picture! Smile

* * *

ok, enjoy the rest of aidiladha, people! may Allah grant us patience and courage to keep sacrificing for our religion, our family, our country. amin.

Seminggu Syawal @ Dubai

aku masuk semua cerita beraya seminggu syawal ni dalam satu posting je lah. senang. hihi. pokoknya, entri kali ni pasal minggu pertama beraya kat dubai, kawan-kawan di dubai dan makanan malaysia kat dubai.

bab makanan tu yang penting. hoho.

RAYA PERTAMA

abg zaim tuan rumah (sitting on sofa in brown), abg faisal shon in black baju melayu, my mr. khairul in brown on the carpet

terima kasih cik tuan rumah sitting in the middle in black abaya

* * *

terima kasih tuan rumah adilah (baju kurung biru) & hafiz (baju melayu hitam)

lepas tu zoom ke oud metha – rumah hafiz dan adilah. sweet je couple ni. kami dijamu laksa pekat panas dan puding roti. kuah kacang nasi himpit pun ada. memang kenyang. rezeki kami pulak jadi batch tetamu terakhir jadi dapat pulak bungkus laksa bawak balik. memang best! terima kasih banyak-banyak hafiz dan adilah. alhamdulillah!

budaya membungkus ni bagus diamalkan, terutama kalau ade makanan lebih dan takde tetamu nak datang dah. tak membazir makanan yang berlebihan, dapat pulak bersedekah, dan kawan-kawan pun dapat merasa makanan kita kat rumah masing-masing. aku lepas tu siap beli ziplock bag kat ikea kalau-kalau ade yang nak membungkus masa rumah terbuka aku nanti! hihi

* * *

RAYA KEDUA

mak-mak orang – me, lin yang dah 6 bulan jadi mak buyong; tuan rumah kak zulfa in orange tudung; adilah in pink tudung & ida

terima kasih jemput kami! tuan rumah abang razali in light blue t, hafiz, TK, mr. khairul & bob

* * *

* * *

RAYA KEEMPAT

khaleef dengan anak tuan rumah, sarah

raya ke-4 kami berkunjung pulak ke rumah abg faisal dan kak muna di bur dubai. aku rasa rumah ni yang sangat menarik hiasan raya nya – ade rambu-ramba kilat-kilat kaler hijau kat pintu masuk, ada ketupat kat dinding, ade replika lampu minyak tanah kat satu sudut rumah – memang terasa kemeriahannya.

jiran dari syria fatin, kak muna tuan rumah (tudung biru), eiyda, me & kak ani

nak tambah kemeriahan beraya di tanah arab, kak muna jemput pulak jiran arabnya sekeluarga yang berasal dari syria. yg isteri tu cantik orangnya. suka bercerita tapi cakap bahasa arab penuh, sebab dia tak berapa sangat bahasa inggeris ni. aku paham sikit-sikit je. selebihnya memang aku senyum-senyum angguk je.

aku suka sesi ni, sebab boleh la ingat-ingat balik sepatah dua patah ape aku belaja kat uia dulu haha. berkarat gile dah. kagum dengan kak muna yang gigih belajar bahasa arab dengan jirannya ni. kak muna cuba sedaya upaya berbahasa arab dengan dia walaupun kadangkala tak pasti dengan penggunaannya. syabas la kak muna.

jiran aku – sebelah kanan dari india, belah depan dari rusia, belah kiri pulak omputeh. sigh.

dari kiri – husband kak ani (tak ingat nama adoi) abe nik, pak arab dari syria, tuan rumah abg faisal & mr. khairul

jamuan rumah terbuka abg faisal dan kak muna memang sempoi – makan nasi putih panas-panas dengan sup daging, kari ikan, ikan masin dan yang istimewa sekali, kerabu betik muda. aku memang tak reti masak kari ikan, jadi sangat teruja dapat makan tu kat sini haha.

terima kasih jemput kami!

* * *

RAYA KELIMA

kak marini, nadia, liza, azian, me & tuan rumah eiyda

ape-ape hal aku tambah 3 kali! (mangkuk nya kecik ok!)

* * *

sekian cerita berhari raya aku di dubai. kalau ade rezeki, ade beberapa jemputan beraya lagi yang kami akan redah dalam minggu kedua syawal ni. insyaAllah, rumah terbuka kami pulak menyusul dalam minggu ke-3. tunggu jemputan ye. hihi.

kawan-kawan dubai yang beraya di malaysia – bila nak balik dubai ni? kami nak datang beraya!
