Birthday & Farewell Picnic @ Safa Park With Perwakilan Dubai

weather was fantastic – not too hot, a little windy. the venue : safa park. great food, great company – hanging out with the perwakilan dubai gang!

‘perwakilan’ simply comprises of the consuls, directors, vice-consuls and officers of malaysian governmental agencies in dubai. and their wives. or husbands. and pets. if any. haha. adoi lama gile tak lepak dengan diorang. this gathering was held for a birthday : dilah’s daughter ain turns 7; and also a farewell for mazlan and fiza who will be moving on, serving the country in mumbai.

‘chegu’ dilah distributing the presents – win or lose, everyone gets one! dilah bought all the presents; and I like the fact that they’re all books – coloring books for the younger ones, and activity books for the older ones – and not just simple toys that get broken or they get bored with after a few days. good job!

The Perwakilan Ladies Meet Baby Kazim

kazim is two weeks old today.

from the moment we brought him back home, he's been receiving guests wanting to see his cutie pie face hihi. first kak zaida and family came that night to send khaleef and kahfi whom they took care of when mr. khairul was busy with me in the hospital.

then few days later our 'neighbour' kamil who's also mr. khairul's mckk batchmate came with a buddy from abu dhabi and his family.

the next night another mckk alumni bro faisal and wife kak muna came bringing home-cooked lauk pantang for me - yum!

and just this morning, a group of 11 ladies came!

* * *

today morning kazim welcomed the *perwakilan ladies who came by to take a peek at the new baby kay. now what is the 'perwakilan' club?

*'perwakilan' is an acronym of 'persatuan wanita kementerian luar negeri', and membership is automatically opened to wives of home-based staff of the malaysian high commission and malaysian govermental agencies.
~ from its facebook page

it's just nice to know that apart from the wonderful friends i've made while in dubai, i also belonged to this little club; headed by the consul general's wife kak sarah, and members include wives of consuls, vice-consuls, directors and officers of the malaysian gov agencies in dubai.

it was a festive affair; with the ladies chattering about babywearing, exchanging recipes and cooking tips with mr. khairul's mom, as well as sharing stories of pantang experience.

khaleef & tini

hmm. i think the kids enjoyed it the most! don't bother with khaleef's icky blue teeth! he got that after munching a very blue, very berry doughnut!

"girl! girlllllll!!!" khaleef jerit panggil. sape pulak si 'girl' ni? la...si tini rupanya, fairus's eldest girl. i think they're so cute together! *wink wink*

kahfi & falisha

while big bro hit it off with si kakak, kahfi went and lepak with the little sister la pulak! hihi. falisha is super cute and super chubby. *pinch pinch*!

little hafiyy & mama adzlin; opah khaleef kasi donut kat budak-budak

mr. khairul's mom made a simple bihun goreng and cucur for the guests. and it's comforting to see that even simple dishes can be a nice little touch to a great company.

the kids munch doughnuts, of course!

fairus the mom-photographer; and the awesome gift box from her with lotsa goodies for not only kazim, but mak kazim as well!

fida is the designated photographer for our perwakilan club, while fairus is slowly carving her niche in artistic photography. so, the two were talk-talk-talking-camera just now! towards the end, auntie fairus was busy clicking away for snapshots of the sleeping kazim.

...and even planned a special photoshoot soon!

* * *

the ladies brought lotsa goodies; and i think even bottles of kicap cap kipas udang! best!

my silly socks, and the one from fida

fida gave me a pair of korea socks - sweet and flowery, a striking contrast from my black, silly pair of smiley socks! thanks fida!

the ladies also signed a card - thank you all!

thanks so much to consul general's wife kak sarah, datin nora, kak zulfa, kak mala, kak pah, kak nik, kak nor, nyta, adzlin, fida and fairus for sparing some time to visit my little kazim.

thanks for your warmth presence and the goodies you ladies brought! i think khaleef was most excited to see the big box of dunkin donuts that made his teeth turned blue! yikes!

special thanks to fairus for bringing me that one item i really needed but did not have! *wink wink* - she also gave kazim this wonderfully weird blanket-like-slash-dolly-slash-scarecrow-like thingy that works like babies' bantal busuk. it's really something new and i urm....sheesh, i think i need another posting just for that cute silly-willy little item. hihi.

thanks again, ladies! kalau ade masa datanglah lagi!

pesanan istimewa untuk kak linda and fauziah - bila nak visit baby kazim ni? hihi.

Duta Malaysia di Channel Dubai One

caught this on tv today.

this tv program titled 'ambassador', was aired on channel dubaiONE. and surprise surprise! it was an interview with our very own malaysia ambassador to the uae, dato' yahaya abdul jabar.

a mesra-rakyat leader, i can see his warm personality when speaking about his childhood and education, at the same time his professionalism when talking about malaysia-uae economic relations.

malaysia ambassador to the uae, dato' yahaya abdul jabar

he started of with a personal take on his life as a young boy growing up in penang and his college years. it showed him as an everyday man with carefree childhood and exciting student life (do-it-yourself toys and student demo against vietnam war during his UM days!)

then he moved on to describe his first arrival to uae, from his previous posting in south africa.

later the topic moved on to a more serious matter like trade relations between malaysia and the uae, timber promo, tourism and investment. he also applauded the many malaysian construction companies that became part of the many developments in the uae, including big projects in reem island abu dhabi and also across dubai.

bangga pulak!

here's a short clip i managed to take while the program was on air. i think it was taped in 2009 but i'm not sure whether they're only airing it now or whether it's a rerun. nways, enjoy the clip!

Berbuka + Merdeka @ Jumeirah Beach Hotel

for our national day celebration in dubai, we were invited by the dubai business council for iftar plus merdeka do at one of dubai's famous landmark, the wave-shaped building that's nearest to the 7 star burj al-arab hotel in the world - the jumeirah beach hotel.

it's one of the pioneer hotels in dubai, being the 9th tallest building when it was first built in 1997 - at present it did not even make it to the top 100 tallest buildings in dubai what with the speedy sky-scraping development done all over for the past 10 years. yet, jumeirah beach hotel remain an icon in this tanah arab.

the lobby

we dined at 'diwan al-khayal', a hut-like one-storey wooden building that is separated from the hotel but offers the fantastic view of the burj al-arab. punya la malehnya pak-pak arab kot, there's a buggy service that takes you from the hotel's main building to the 'diwan'.

ala, jalan kaki je lah! bukan jauh sangat...

as we brought a stroller along, we had to pick seats at the far back for easy access. you see the seats were combined with one another in a long line like a canteen table, which makes it difficult for someone to squeeze his or her way if they're sitting in the middle lane, and impossible for one with a stroller. i don't know whether the seats were arranged like that because there were too many of us, (thus the need to accomodate more tables) or because that's just the way it is which sucks.

but sitting at the back has its merits - we're the nearest to the burj and everytime i turned to khaleef to check on his eating (and table manners - or lack of!) i would see the burj al-arab changing colors in the dark of night. gorgeous!

the burj al-arab in the evening (at the top), near senja (below it) and at night with the colors yellow and then purple

the food? i honestly didn't expect to be greeted with malaysian dish all over! i really thought it'd be nasi arab, and roti arab, humus and segala macam makanan arab lah!

when i saw satay i was already jiggly! then i saw asam laksa stall beside it. wah! walking further up, a nasi lemak stall and the best was a stall with freshly made roti canai and murtabak - made there and then! awesome!

i quickly grabbed a bowl of laksa first, followed by berkeping-keping roti canai (as i had a bad experience back in malaysia with MUHSIN restaurant yang kata roti canai fresh baru buat tapi bawak balik tengok roti keras and nampak sangat dia panaskan je!) anyways, that's the last that i'd mention that coz i got my yummy roti canai already!

mr. khairul started with two helpings of bubur lambuk as he said it was really one of the best he'd tasted. me not a fan but i tried a few spoonfuls from his bowl. not bad!

khaleef had nasi lemak and roti canai. i made him eat the savoury ones first before telling him there's actually a kid's counter with bananas in pajamas plastic plate, and sugar-glazed doughnuts, cookies, muffins and ice-cream served on knee-high tables!

i dunno bout you, but i love looking at how the buffet is arranged - the special plates, pots and pans that they used, the decor, the placing of food, the unique looking bowl they put dips and sauce in - and in this particular buffet i found the chicken and fish curry placed in woks on stoves! cute!

my, my. no wonder the malaysian dishes were scrumptious - just like home - it's made by our very own team of malaysian chefs! patut la roti canai sebijik macam kat mamak, roti canai macam makcik pagi-pagi kat giant and ayam percik macam kat pasar malam rapat setia! it was fun meeting the very friendly malaysian chefs. tetap dapat lepas rindu merasa makanan malaysia walaupun baru seminggu lepas ade di sana!

after a hefty buffet meal, the malaysians took time to socialize, mingle, renew ties and make new ones. hardly anyone was sitting down unless they're still eating (or have two boisterous boys to take care of!) - most were standing around catching up and chatting amongst themselves.

i met the new trade commisioner for matrade who is a nice, friendly man with years of experience on his back.

at the back of the hall, a poster was ready on a stand that proudly say - 'national day celebration 2009' with the jalur gemilang on it. as the night drew near to the end, the chefs brought out a cake! a fantastic looking chocolate cake with bushy hibiscus (our national flower, bunga raya) and our jalur gemilang in sugary-glossy finishing!

our malaysia ambassador to the united arab emirates, dato' yahya and wife, datin saerah were asked to officiate the ceremony by cutting the merdeka cake.

before that, our consul general, tuan syed and wife madam sarah joined them in the singing of our national anthem 'negaraku'. it was a goose-bumpin moment when the crowd gathered around the cake, standing up, ready to sing. when we first started, khaleef instantly started singing too.

but he sang 'happy birthday' instead!

and of course, after dato' yahya made the first cut in the cake, some took turns to take pictures with the lovely merdeka cake before the chefs cut it out into pieces for the guests. of course we had to join in!

everyone was too full for the cake, or too busy chatting. so the chefs prepared a few containers, cut up the cakes and placed them inside for guests to take home.

the only person - only person who ate the cake there and then at the hotel, even before the chefs finished cutting up the cake - was khaleef.

"uncle, cake please?" and one chef became his personal maitre de! cuting a cake specially for him, take a plate for him, bring him a fork - and upon seeing his difficulty in using a fork - had actually gone away into the kitchen looking for a smaller tea-spoon in exchange for the fork. and when khaleef insisted on sitting at the high chair at the bar, the chef carried him up, making sure he's all comfy before leaving him to munch his choc merdeka cake. all for tuan khaleef. haha!

then it was time go home. we saw this adorable fat cat right outside the makan hall. actually susah tau nak nampak kucing liar kat tanah arab ni!

..and of course, the night would not be complete without a family potrait against the majestic sight of burj al-arab. nampaknya ini macam shot menarik untuk hantar kat salam perantau. amacam? hihi.

A Ring, A Cake, A Concert & The Crown Prince

the ring, the cake, the concert and the crown prince - seem like ingredients for a modern fairy tale, huh? actually the ring is for my gal pal haida, the cake is for my cousin umar, the concert is one that i will be missing and the crown prince is one whom mr. khairul met last week.

what's the whole story?

* * *

haida will be haida - even with an engagement ring she's still spunky as ever!

been noticing a lot of weddings and engagement going on on this date - 060609. my spunky colleague back in puchong - haida also got engaged on this date. we've only known each other for the times and years we worked together, but i always felt we can get along very well, especially the heart to heart talk. this july you spill all, ok!

i am so glad that she finally found love in the form of 'papa bear' nik muhammad hafiz. he must be some guy, for i know haida is a tough nut to crack! i wish she'll have her wedding in july so that i could attend, but not too soon, she says. well, may your fiance and you sail the engagement boat with patience and understanding (beware : darah muda!), till the wedding kompang comes!

owh, and with the whole gorgeous princess-y do, i really think you look a bit like tiara jacquelina lah! congrats on the engagement, dear!

* * *

khaleef & his uncle umar

a chocolate cake for my cousin umar abdul aziz on his birthday today! umar is the son of my mak's youngest sister. quiet in his own curious way, he surprised yong and i when he senyap-senyap belanja his nephews - haiqal, haqeem and khaleef mcd nuggets, when we went there right before i flew to dubai. and he bought 'em with his duit raya...

awwww!

happy birthday, umar!

p/s: another yummy cake wish also goes out to the msian dubai consulate general's wife, kak sarah who celebrates her birthday today! cheers! ape hadiah from tuan syed? ;)

* * *

lelaki ini yang aku mahu saksikan dalam konsert julai ini!

i have such a huge, huge crush on anuar zain (you're still numero uno, honey!). i've met him a couple of times, including sitting right in front of him at a hotlink gig (gasp!) he's a real darling in person, polite and humble with his fans. and that smile, (melt!) and the voice (swoon!) that captivate his fans everywhere are second to none. sigh!

yes, some of you might already know i'll be flying back to malaysia tanah tumpah darahku in july, but i'll be missing the concert then. his first, full-fledge concert to be held at istana budaya, no less - my old theater haunt! aw, shucks..!

* * *

mr. khairul, mr. haiqal, mr. razak, mr. hakim, dato yahaya & tuan syed hasrin - h.h sheikh saud in inset

mr. khairul joined malaysian delegates, headed by our own dubai ambassador, dato' yahaya abdul jabar to ras al-khaimah, another one of 7 emirates in the uae, for an official visit. also there was our consulate general, tuan syed hasrin.

i heard their entourage was even flanked by police cars and superbikes, leading them up to the palace and the club where they had lunch! classy!

at the palace, the delegates had an audience with H.H Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi, the Crown Prince and Deputy Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah. i don't think mr. khairul had even been this close to other royalties and sultans back in malaysia - except perhaps the dashing Sultan Azlan Shah who's a mcob?

oh, well - for more detail, read all about it in the my-uae times here.

* * *

hey, wonder whether i'll get a pearl ring, a cheese cake, and my own prince charming, khairul serenading me the song 'lelaki ini' in a private concert? this 24th? hmm?

check out these postings too!
