Awesome Buildings Around Dubai & Abu Dhabi

you know the world’s tallest building burj khalifa is in dubai, but do you know there are many more buildings in dubai with awesome titles too? world’s tallest hotel, world’s tallest twisting tower, world’s furthest leaning tower – all here in united arab emirates.

here are more incredible buildings in dubai which prove that dubai never ceases to amaze me.

* * *

IMG_5568

my sis-in-law tina is standing in front of ‘cayan twisted tower’ in dubai marina – the world’s tallest twisted tower, twisting 90 degrees. standing at 310m, 75 floors; with each floor rotating by 1.2 degree. so beautiful, so iconic! to build something strong and concrete like that in its twisted form is amazing. it’s an apartment building tapi bila lalu malam-malam nmpak few lights je on. penuh ke tak penuh lagi ni?

IMG_5681

I was at safa park with my in-laws to check out stuff at the dubai flee market. the two blue buildings behind us is the JW marriott marquis dubai – the world’s tallest hotel at 355m, and 72 storey. all the suites at JW marriott marquis dubai come with sheikh mohammed’s book of poetry penned by himself.

IMG_5128

me, mr. khairul with his mom and aunt in front of the awesome coin-shaped ‘aldar HQ’ building at the edge of abu dhabi. another great feats of engineering and architecture in the UAE!

bangunanbulat2

this quirky-looking building is simply called the ‘O-14’. some call it the ‘cheese grater’ building or the ‘honeycomb’. to me it’s the polkadot building! I always see it from afar, from sheikh zayed road on our way to dubai mall but never got near enough to take a picture – until now. one of my favorite buildings in dubai!

162639_501589818307_4224365_n

this is ‘capital gate’ – popularly known as ‘the leaning tower of abu dhabi’ – the world’s furthest leaning man-made tower. at 160m and 35 stories, it is one of the tallest buildings in the city and features an 18° incline to the west (according to wikipedia). that’s me and khaleef with abah on his visit here few years back. you can see how long it has been when you see how small my eldest khaleef is. hihi. abah you should come back again soon – so much new stuff happening in dubai and abu dhabi!

* * *

there are many, many more interestingly shaped buildings in dubai and abu dhabi – and the ones I features here are just top of the ice-berg. awesome! and as usual – everything is ‘the most’ ‘world’s tallest, biggest, widest, leanest, –est –est –est!’ haha.

check out and gp google burj khalifa, burj arab, sheikh zayed grand mosque, the ferrari world theme park and viceroy hotel for more awesomeness!

waiting for the world’s biggest marvel theme park to finish and open here in dubai!

to teen-angst years of mckk
so much work and serious play

need to grow need to get more
off to the States a lot is in store
challenges, experience and such he did get
living life full with aint no regret

in ipoh was the chance meeting
love at first sight hearts a-fleeting
9 years later a happy family at hand
three-boys is more than he could stand!

from penang to kl the humble days

to mr. khairul, on his 31st birthday, written in 2010 :

thirty years after your birthdate
plus one year in addition
a special poem to my soulmate
from me, a heart rendition

thirty years of ups and downs
plus one year to that
you can be serious, you can be a clown
you walk your talk, you know where it's at

thirty years of joy and tears
plus one year additionally
challenges, obstacles, hope and fears
you conquered all, be proud be jolly!

thirty years of life
plus one year more
with a hot gorgeous wife
and two boys you adore

thirty years of hits and misses
plus one year further
i'll always have hugs and a whole lotta kisses
to a great guy, sweet darling and wonderful father!

thirty years of glory
plus one year too
you've got an amazing history
by simply just being YOU!

* * *

written in 2011 for his 32nd birthday

you're 32 so what is new?
grey hairs are peeking out
don't worry though it's just a few
need not get all freak out

you're 32 so how's it hangin?
your tummy expands an inch
no worries hon, don't go head-bangin
there's more of you to clinch

you're 32 so what's up doc?
forgetfulness persist
you left your keys you mix your sock
but i'm there to assist

you're 32 so how are things?
always been the same great man
grey hair, amnesia, tummy expanding
oh, just enjoy life as you can!

you're 32 so here's the deal
have so much more to thank for
a loving wife that's for real
3 boys whom you adore

you're 32 ok that’s that
enjoy this happy moment
give yourself a nice good pat
for another year of excitement!

* * *

written in 2012 for his 33rd birthday

33 you're today
i always write sweet rhymes
this birthday goes some other way
a cuckoo poem this time

33 is one cool number
because it's double three
i really need to slumber
i'm so sleepy-ee.

33 has got essence
you've lived life wild and wise
this poem gonna make no sense
i'm hungry.

33 is thirtythree
when you spell it yes it's true
this poem may be weird you see
but know that I LOVE YOU!

Dubai Flea Market @ Safa Park

one man’s junk is another man’s treasure – that pretty much sums up ‘flea market’ for me. flea market is for people to sell unwanted items cluttering up their homes – and sell it to people looking for a good bargain of that special something that they can get for an extremely cheap price.

abaya for aed30, ceramic bowl for aed15, books for aed5-10 and pretty accessories for just aed1 – if you have a good eye for cheap things.

..and who has a good eye that I know of? my mother-in-law. she has been to the safa park flea market countless times whenever she comes visiting, and came back with beautiful frames, gorgeous antique treasure boxes, and cheap abayas and dresses.

and how many times have I been to the dubai flea market at safa park in my 5 years here? this was my FIRST time. word.

IMG_5621

mr. khairul setting up camp right by all the actions at dubai flea market, safa park.

yeap, this was my first time ever at a dubai flea market, and I was thoroughly entertained! it was definitely NOT just about business. it was a festival! people of all walks setting up tents here and there, and some spread out their picnic mat, snacks ready and just lie down reading that aed5 book that they just bought.

they’re planning to stay till the flea market closes!

IMG_5612

I caught this amusing moment : my eldest khaleef, always the reliable son helping bapak set up camp, while my youngest kazim looked on to see what he can help with. my second boy kahfi? relaxing on the picnic foldable chair, enjoying the view. hihi.

IMG_5618

the boys hanging out in the tent while mak went bargain-hunting with their grandma and aunt.

IMG_5615

kazim chillaxing on the picnic mat, munchin snacks

IMG_5614

my mom-in-law fixed a delicious spicy fried noodle. simple gile tapi pedas so sangat menyelerakan~

IMG_5635

my mom-in-law played out her bargaining cards and got a good deal on lots of tops and dresses. bravo!

I think the key is to always smile, asked nicely for a bargain, and be politely persistent! haha. it’s definitely worth it if it means spending as little as possible.

also, learn to read the expression and body language too – when the seller seemed hesitant about the price, you might end up paying less; however if the seller seemed firm and adamant on the original price, she/he would most likely to stick to it – so just move on, there are many other stalls! good luck!

IMG_5628

happy bargain-hunters!

IMG_5643

flea market. in the beautiful green safa park. among tall palm trees. crowded. bustling with buying and selling. but windy. a nice day to be rummaging through other people’s junks to find that one treasured item! haha.

IMG_5659

mr. khairul’s aunt mak lang and his mom. and his sis tina on the picnic chair. tired but satisfied with today’s catch! berbondot-bondot plastik bag! kih kih. to me, our best catch of the day would be a big white bowl in the shape of a sampan that we got for just aed15, and an elegant, looks-new abaya for aed30. can’t wait for the next flea market!

IMG_5654

not everyone was ready for this family photo but I kinda like it. us in shades of green, spontaneous laughter, genuine smiles, full tummies, clear boredom in one (hihi) and just a peek of me; but enough to see how incredibly grateful I am to be surrounded by my loved ones.

IMG_5680

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque : Majestic Marble Mosque

mr. khairul called it the white mosque. made of white marble, i guess it is pretty fitting. looking so majestic from far away, made more resplendent with the sun shining. the sunlight, reflecting upon the snow white marble gave it an illusion of an arabian castle built on white clouds.

simply breathtaking.

IMG_5189

with my eldest son khaleef in front of sheikh zayed grand mosque. stunningly beautiful! amazing! gorgeous! I’m gonna be lost for words after this – I need a thesaurus!

fun facts about sheikh zayed grand mosque :

  • can fit 40,000 worshippers
  • it features 82 domes, and over a 1,000 columns
  • the outside columns are decorated in a floral design with semi-precious stones, and 96 columns in the main prayer hall, each inlaid with pearls
  • it has 24 carat gold gilded chandeliers decked in swarovski crystals
  • the floors in the prayer hall is covered with the world's largest hand knotted carpet;
designed by iranian artist ali khaliqi and hand crafted by 1,300 artisans
  • the main prayer hall is dominated by one of the world’s largest chandeliers –10 metres in diameter, 15 metres in height and weighing 12 tonnes
  • the mosque's first ceremony was the funeral of its namesake, Sheikh Zayed, who is buried at the site. sheikh zayed is the late president of UAE (some say bapa UAE, macam tunku abd rahman kita)

IMG_5137

me, khairul’s mom, khairul’s aunt maklang & sis tina

the first time I was here was with my mom-in-law (in salmon-colored tudung) when she was here in 2009 after I delivered my 2nd son kahfi. I’ve also taken my abah and umi to perform prayers here.

fast-forward to 2014, now again with my mom-in-law and her sis maklang and my sis-in-law. khairul’s aunt saw a recording of the eid prayers held in sheikh zayed grand mosque, and has been wanting to come see for herself ever since. alhamdulillah, a dream come true!

IMG_5143

the car park of the mosque is like the underground park to a shopping mall! here we are walking from the lift towards the prayer halls.

IMG_5146IMG_5153

entering the courtyard of the mosque – a picture from the outside, and another one from the inside.

IMG_5175

the mosque courtyard is covered with flowery mosaic; easily one of the largest marble mosaic in the world. such amazingness to step on!

IMG_5237

4 very tall minarets on the 4 corners of the mosque and bulbs of domes - 57 domes of 7 different sizes to be exact, covering the outside yard and the main building. standing at the courtyard, i can really see the domes popping out on top of the majestic mosque, like cendawan lepas hujan!

IMG_5158IMG_5169IMG_5174

those long rows of columns? this is what they look like close-up. embedded with gorgeous flower motif lingering upwards towards bunches of gold-plated leaves.

IMG_5190

me on the path towards the place for ablution

* * *

IMG_5164IMG_5165IMG_5166

to go to the place of ablution, you need to go down the escalator, where the ceiling design is no less impressive. so pretty! look at that green tiles! the washroom is tiled like that too!

IMG_5167

and this is where worshippers purify themselves with wudu’ (ablution). abu hurairah said, “I heard the Messenger of Allah (saw) say, ‘on the day of rising, my community will be called ‘those with white blazes on their foreheads and limbs’ from the effects of wudu’. so whoever of you can increase the extent of whiteness, should do so.’”

* * *

IMG_5178

time to pray. only with mr. khairul’s mom, sis and aunt. mr. khairul took the boys to the main prayer hall to pray. this is where we can keep our shoes. if I’m not mistaken, if you’re skeptical in leaving your shoes here, the officers around the mosque can provide you with a plastic bag to keep your shoes. but insyaAllah, your shoes are safe in UAE!

IMG_5181

this is not the main prayer hall, but my, it’s already SO stunning. I was dumbfounded for a few seconds, starring at the ceiling.

IMG_5183

this cute arab girl kept looking at us getting ready for prayers, especially mr. khairul’s mom. probably not used to seeing our white prayer garments – ye la mak dia dah pakai jubah, pakai tudung tu cukup lah kan! actually, that’s the truth – as long as you cover your aurah, it’s acceptable. like my sis syida said, ‘when you go out no matter where, if you’re not dressed ready for prayers (covering aurah properly) then you’re not really dressing properly.’ snap!

IMG_5195

the place where the Qurans are kept is so pretty and elegant. even the clock on the wall too – that reminds us of the prayer times.

* * *

IMG_5198

this is the wall outside of the main prayer hall that has the biggest carpet and the biggest chandelier in a mosque. it’s quite a magnificent sight! I wanna have this in my bedroom! bunga-bunga tu timbul tau!

IMG_5232

to see how big and high up the pretty wall is, here’s my sis-in-law tina with her nephew khaleef standing by the side.

IMG_5197

look at that chandelier. I actually prefer this design than the celebrated ‘world’s biggest chandelier in a mosque’. sigh. so beautiful. and we’re not even inside the prayer hall yet.

IMG_5227

and here we are, inside the main prayer hall. covered with the world's largest hand knotted carpet; designed by iranian artist ali khaliqi and hand crafted by 1,300 artisans. the main prayer hall is dominated by one of the world’s largest chandeliers –10 metres in diameter, 15 metres in height and weighing 12 tonnes.

IMG_5216

the world’s biggest chandelier in a mosque – here in the main prayer hall of sheikh zayed grand mosque.

IMG_5225

the marble floor inside the main prayer hall is also adorned with lingering flower motif. love it so much!

IMG_5206

this is just breathtaking. the 99 names (qualities or attributes) of Allah are featured on the kiblat wall in traditional kufi calligraphy. you can’t help but stand there for few moments; not only to admire the beauty of the wall but especially to reflect on the great attributes of our Creator.

IMG_5214

the columns inside the prayer halls are 96 altogether; each inlaid with pearls. amazing.

* * *

IMG_5242

oh my. even the place for ‘drinking water’ is so lovely.

IMG_5238

unlike other mosques in abu dhabi, the sheikh zayed grand mosque is open daily to visitors, muslims or non-muslims; except on friday morning, which is for worshippers only. this leniency is given in order to promote cultural and religious understanding. it is also an architectural marvel that should be shared irrespective of religion.

remember to dress respectfully, covering your body appropriately. however, black abayas are available (and kandoora for the men) for guests to wear if they came unprepared.

IMG_5236

the sheikh zayed grand mosque is really an amazing mosque with magnificent persian and moorish architecture. there’s a certain tranquility as you take the long walk across the beautiful floor with the flower mosaic; or sit staring at the beautifully lined columns while waiting for the call for prayers; admiring the magnificence of the white marble domes as they glistened in the sun. even for non-muslims, this should be a spiritual experience that will – I promise – bring you peace.
