Tribes : African Steakhouse @ Mall of Emirates

i feel like eating steak.

“it’s not your birthday,” mr. khairul said.

“ok. hmm, because it’s raya (eid).

and so we went for a steak dinner!

we went to ‘tribes’ at mall of the emirates. i had wanted to eat here for my birthday last june, but we mistakenly went to dubai mall, so had to settle for ‘outback steakhouse’ instead.

‘tribes’ is an african steakhouse, or some would describe it as an ‘african-themed steakhouse’, or a ‘steakhouse with an african concept’ because it’s not truly african through and through – it’s just a steakhouse with african setting, and a few african dishes thrown in the menu just to give it an african look.

with high ceiling, stone walls and simple lighting, it made the interior of the restaurant looks like a tribal house somewhere in africa. it gave a good vibe, and great african atmosphere. the setting is set!

* * *

we sat at the couple seat, and let the boys take the sheep-skin chairs each haha. love the comfy leather and knitted cushions. since we were seated at a corner, against the wall, by the open kitchen, we even sat cross-legged at some point during the meal. that’s how comfy it was!

khaleef loves the sheep-skin chair! it looks like it’s handmade from scratch, joined only by loops of ropes, with a sheep-skin thrown on top. very tribal!

the decor helped establish the african theme of course – with african tribal masks on the wall, weapons and sheild suggestively made from some sort of animal skin. there’s even a drum – sometimes the staff just break into a song drumming and hakuna-matata-ing in the middle of the restaurant!

if the staff at tgif sang or rap for a birthday song, here at tribes, you will get a tribal song drummed just for the birthday boy/girl. unique and entertaining!

* * *

what to order?

as a steakhouse, tribes offers a host of typical steaks, chops and chicken. rump, sirloin, shanks – they’ve got it. all the steak dishes come with a choice of fries or mashed potato, as well as a choice of steak sauce – mushroom sauce or black pepper sauce; all complimentary.

(this is far better than the overpriced steakhouse ‘meat & co’ where you have to PAY for all the side-dishes, or else your plate of steak would just be empty. JUST steak without any vege or fries of dip!)

and as an ‘african’ steakhouse, there is also an added list of ‘tribal specialities’ like ‘peppered beef *potjie’ and ‘kalahari roast lamb’ which was the choice of mr. khairul. he’s the more adventurous foodie between us, and would always try to order something unique from the menu.

the weirder the dish, the more intrigued he gets!

*in south africa, potjiekos (pronounced poikeekos), literally translated "small pot food", is a stew prepared outdoors in a traditional round, cast iron, three-legged pot (the potjie) which is found in the homes and villages of people throughout southern africa. the pot is heated efficiently using small amounts of wood, charcoal.” ~wikipedia

these are the 'african specialties' (in the menu above) but i read that the branch in johannesburg serves ‘ostrich carpaccio’, which would be so interesting! (‘interesting refers to the ostrich bit, not the carpaccio bit – which means a dish of raw meat!)

mr. khairul’s ‘kalahari roast lamb’

anyway, mr. khairul ordered the ‘kalahari roast lamb’ and before i talk about the taste, i just LOVE the food presentation – looks like it's some kind of canyon surrounded by river of lava with a single tree on top! so beautiful! cantik kan?

the 'river of lava' is actually cut-up tomatoes, onions and capsicum cooked in some sort of spicy-sweet-sour sauce – which becomes a vege stew. a nice addition, and gave the lamb some exotic taste.

the roast lamb itself is full of spices – as its description on the menu, “..marinated in ancient bushman spices”, so it’s not your regular western-style marinated lamb.

VERDICT : mr. khairul wasn’t so crazy about the TASTE because it’s a little like the lamb we have with our mandi rice (really!), tasty, but he probably expected more. however, the TEXTURE is top-notch. tender, and melts in the mouth. yum.

i took the rump steak – simply because it’s the cheapest, and there wasn’t any plain ol lamb chops, which what i really wanted. i asked for medium rare, just as i like it.

because my dish is plain – i mean, it’s simply steak and fries. full-stop – the deliciousness of the steak must depend on the marinate, and cooking time.

VERDICT : my steak is delicious, simply put. the texture was perfect, not too chewy and not too hard and dry. tender and juicy. the salt, the spice, the taste all combined perfectly.

i absolutely LOVE big fat fries so i have no complains there. my mushroom sauce is also thick, yummy and not too salty (the mushroom sauce at outback restaurant is VERY salty. yes VERY).

my simple plate of rump steak turned out to be a pretty delightful dish.

my mushroom sauce

the boys shared a plate of cheeseburger from the kids’ menu. the beef patty is huge and we’re glad all THREE of them can share that one burger! khaleef ate the beef patty, kahfi munched the bread, and kazim finished the fries – kerjasama!

open-kitchen concept

i’m all for open-kitchen concept. the restaurant which has open-kitchen concept can show how clean their kitchen is, it shows that they have pride in the way they prepare the food, and the hustle and bustle of a kitchen can set the mood for a food feast that’s coming. i also enjoy watching the chef cook the dishes!

however, not all will like this concept. maybe some may feel that the smoke and steam from the open kitchen would be a turn-off, and might also be noisy.

however you may feel, ‘tribes’ has a huge (and long) open kitchen at the back of the restaurant, and if you don’t prefer sitting near the open kitchen, you can choose to sit near the entrance of the restaurant, closer to the fountain outside.

* * *

the waiters wear simple yellow or red t-shirts which is a bit disappointing because i expect all the staff to be wearing exotic african costume. the only thing exotic is the colorful beady necklace they wear.

only the usher at the entrance wear something more elaborate like the one in the picture above. and even then, i would expect a more extravagant headgear!

well, uniform and costumes aside, the waiters were friendly and helpful especially in describing and recommending food from the menu.

looks like this place is a favorite among the arabs. as i spotted a lot of them eating here. no doubt, i would agree and would definitely come again on another meaningful occasion. hihi.

‘tribes’ is situated at ground floor at the fashion dome area of the mall of emirates, where there’s a beautifully carved water fountain surrounded by restaurants and cafes like pf chang’s and also tribes. try it the next time you’re at the mall of emirates!

The Way Back, The Wave & The Perfect Host

been awhile since i last reviewed a movie. watched a lot of good movies, but never found the time to sit down and think up a review. however, these 3 movies are too brilliant to be ignored.

furthermore, these are highly recommended by mr. khairul, who wanted me to watch more ‘underdog’ movies out of the mainstream, so that i could tell my readers that there are also equally interesting movies out there than just movies about fast cars, vampires or little blue people. hihi.

one is a true story about the extraordinary plight of escaped prisoners in siberia on ‘the way back’. another one is ‘the wave’; about a class assignment gone out of control in just 7 days. and finally a dark comedy about a bank robber who escaped being caught, but got himself into a weird dinner party with ‘the perfect host’.

two words for all three movies : highly recommended.

* * *

how far can human will take you? how’s 4,000 miles? by walking?

world war ll is on. the characters in this amazing film escape from a siberian *gulag camp, and then travel from siberia, across mongolia and china, finally into india. all by WALKING. yes, ON FOOT. unbelievable – but that’s the gist of the film, based on a true account.

*gulag is an acronym that stands for ‘chief administration of corrective labor camps’ established as a place for convicts, who were made to worked to death.

thewayback_map

google map showing their journey. from siberia, mongolia, china then india. on foot.

they face the harsh cold of the snow and the scorching hot gobi desert. they can’t stop walking, or they’ll get caught. they fight wild animals, and hide from villagers who will kill them at sight. they even lost some friends along the way… (this is NOT a spoiler – at the beginning of the movie, a writing on the screen will tell you that only three survived the journey).

imagine. from siberia. across mongolia. into china. and finally india. must. keep. walking.

this movie was co-produced with the national geographic entertainment, so you know you’re going to see incredible shots of sceneries throughout the journey; and you know you’re getting quality story-telling.

i hate war movies. though set during world war ll, this is however, NOT a war film.

it’s a film about determination. a film about friendship. about survival. about adversity. about going against all odds. but most of all, it’s a film about hope. if you need a good cry, watch this movie, and be inspired.

* * *

ever been in a class with a lecturer that’s so cool in his unorthodox way, that you just become engrossed in his teachings, and methods of learning? the lecturer in this movie is such, but what he’s not prepared for is how strongly he has affected the students in his class.

in this german movie ‘the wave’, a lecturer is teaching the subject ‘dictatorship’ in a 7-day program, and tries to make the class interesting through an experiment – what if the class were a country, under the dictatorship of a leader – himself?

lesson one : “discipline is power”. so he makes all the students call him ‘herr’ or ‘sir’ as a mark of respect (out of class he is addressed simply by name), and must not speak, unless permission is given. one student is disturbed by this, and drops out from the class. the rest had fun, and the class becomes popular.

lesson two : “unity is power”. to feel united, the lecturer suggests everyone taking the class to wear white shirt, and blue jeans. subtly, those who do NOT wear white in the class are slowly boycotted. the students, in turn, start to feel pride, and a sense of power. the innocent lecturer continues his experiment, not knowing the ripple he had created.

lesson three : “action is power”. it’s day 5 of class, and the students do more than just write assignments. they want to act on what they have learnt – that ‘action’ IS indeed, power. things are starting to spin out of control…

it was just a 7-day class program, and that was all it took.

this is a fantastic movie with a powerful message served in such a simple setting – a harmless classroom. it’s in german, with english subtitles yet i still find the script good and the acting excellent. definitely a must-see, especially fans of foreign films.

* * *

i LOVE movies with a twist in the end, but ‘the perfect host’ is so twisted that it’s sick! in a good way, of course. not ‘saw’ kind of sick, but just great!

a bank robber on the run stumbles upon a house he plans to use as hiding spot. the owner of the house happens to be waiting for his friends for a dinner party that he’s hosting. and so begins the twisted tale of ‘the perfect host’. and that is all the summary i’m leaving you with. haha.

at one point of the movie, you’d think that you’ve gotten to the twist already, and then you get to another twist – and yet another! it’s a pretty cleverly plotted movie. original storyline and great script. the script was so good that i was imagining the movie being made into a 2-man play. that would be so awesome.

for clueless ones, david hyde pierce is more popularly known in his role as frasier’s younger brother in the award-winning sitcom ‘frasier’. he’s also the voice of the stick-bug in disney’s ‘the bug’s life’. i’d never guess he would be so at home in a dark role in this movie, since i know him as a comedy actor. he delivers an exceptional performance, worthy of a film-award i dare say.

despite my positive review, some may find the movie a little draggy with just the two major characters dominating the whole movie. i suggest you try watching till the end, because the twist is so worth the wait.

three more reviews coming soon : ‘water for elephants’, ‘the rise of the planet of the apes’, and ‘the beaver’. all with animals in their titles!

Happy Wedding Day : Congrats Wani & Ijan

i am missing from two important weddings this year : i missed one already, and going to miss another one in december. sob sob. on a happier note, my gorgeous cousin wani became mrs. ijan last weekend in a glorious ‘garden’ wedding with pink and green as its theme.

wani is the eldest daughter of my mom’s youngest sister whom we call ‘cik’. i wish you both a lifetime of happiness. through the good and bad, for better or worse. have a lot of respect for each other, and most of all patience. listen well, and share often. above all, Allah knows best!

have a blessed marriage!

Seminggu Syawal @ Dubai

aku masuk semua cerita beraya seminggu syawal ni dalam satu posting je lah. senang. hihi. pokoknya, entri kali ni pasal minggu pertama beraya kat dubai, kawan-kawan di dubai dan makanan malaysia kat dubai.

bab makanan tu yang penting. hoho.

RAYA PERTAMA

abg zaim tuan rumah (sitting on sofa in brown), abg faisal shon in black baju melayu, my mr. khairul in brown on the carpet

terima kasih cik tuan rumah sitting in the middle in black abaya

* * *

terima kasih tuan rumah adilah (baju kurung biru) & hafiz (baju melayu hitam)

lepas tu zoom ke oud metha – rumah hafiz dan adilah. sweet je couple ni. kami dijamu laksa pekat panas dan puding roti. kuah kacang nasi himpit pun ada. memang kenyang. rezeki kami pulak jadi batch tetamu terakhir jadi dapat pulak bungkus laksa bawak balik. memang best! terima kasih banyak-banyak hafiz dan adilah. alhamdulillah!

budaya membungkus ni bagus diamalkan, terutama kalau ade makanan lebih dan takde tetamu nak datang dah. tak membazir makanan yang berlebihan, dapat pulak bersedekah, dan kawan-kawan pun dapat merasa makanan kita kat rumah masing-masing. aku lepas tu siap beli ziplock bag kat ikea kalau-kalau ade yang nak membungkus masa rumah terbuka aku nanti! hihi

* * *

RAYA KEDUA

mak-mak orang – me, lin yang dah 6 bulan jadi mak buyong; tuan rumah kak zulfa in orange tudung; adilah in pink tudung & ida

terima kasih jemput kami! tuan rumah abang razali in light blue t, hafiz, TK, mr. khairul & bob

RAYA KEEMPAT

khaleef dengan anak tuan rumah, sarah

raya ke-4 kami berkunjung pulak ke rumah abg faisal dan kak muna di bur dubai. aku rasa rumah ni yang sangat menarik hiasan raya nya – ade rambu-ramba kilat-kilat kaler hijau kat pintu masuk, ada ketupat kat dinding, ade replika lampu minyak tanah kat satu sudut rumah – memang terasa kemeriahannya.

jiran dari syria fatin, kak muna tuan rumah (tudung biru), eiyda, me & kak ani

nak tambah kemeriahan beraya di tanah arab, kak muna jemput pulak jiran arabnya sekeluarga yang berasal dari syria. yg isteri tu cantik orangnya. suka bercerita tapi cakap bahasa arab penuh, sebab dia tak berapa sangat bahasa inggeris ni. aku paham sikit-sikit je. selebihnya memang aku senyum-senyum angguk je.

aku suka sesi ni, sebab boleh la ingat-ingat balik sepatah dua patah ape aku belaja kat uia dulu haha. berkarat gile dah. kagum dengan kak muna yang gigih belajar bahasa arab dengan jirannya ni. kak muna cuba sedaya upaya berbahasa arab dengan dia walaupun kadangkala tak pasti dengan penggunaannya. syabas la kak muna.

jiran aku – sebelah kanan dari india, belah depan dari rusia, belah kiri pulak omputeh. sigh.

dari kiri – husband kak ani (tak ingat nama adoi) abe nik, pak arab dari syria, tuan rumah abg faisal & mr. khairul

jamuan rumah terbuka abg faisal dan kak muna memang sempoi – makan nasi putih panas-panas dengan sup daging, kari ikan, ikan masin dan yang istimewa sekali, kerabu betik muda. aku memang tak reti masak kari ikan, jadi sangat teruja dapat makan tu kat sini haha.

terima kasih jemput kami!

RAYA KELIMA

kak marini, nadia, liza, azian, me & tuan rumah eiyda

ape-ape hal aku tambah 3 kali! (mangkuk nya kecik ok!)

* * *

sekian cerita berhari raya aku di dubai. kalau ade rezeki, ade beberapa jemputan beraya lagi yang kami akan redah dalam minggu kedua syawal ni. insyaAllah, rumah terbuka kami pulak menyusul dalam minggu ke-3. tunggu jemputan ye. hihi.

kawan-kawan dubai yang beraya di malaysia – bila nak balik dubai ni? kami nak datang beraya!
