Dine in the Shower @ The Apartment

yes, it’s true! ‘the apartment’ offers a unique concept of dining – eat in the various ‘rooms’ and sections of ‘the apartment’, like living room, kitchen, bedroom, and yes – bathroom! i’ll tell you more later.

‘the apartment’ at the curve, damansara was the venue for a long-overdue reunion of 3 classmates. we were friends since high school – the only 3 malays who took up english language and literature, so that sort off gelled us together. all of us enjoyed poetry, literature and theatre – and that was how we spent our night outings (at least, when they’re out with me!).

we’ve gone our separate ways after school – having different sets of friends, building a family of our own and pursuing careers – but we stayed in touch, and remained good friends through the years.

the one thing i will never forget is how they were with me when my mak passed away. with my best friend niraku so far away in london, these two girls were there for me. mak passed away at midnight, they came that morning, and stayed the night.

in fact, i remember not eating a single thing for more than 24 hours, and only when they came, we went out to get a bite. i appreciate those moments when i shared tears with them, and for their time and care spent consoling me.

love them to bits!

…and we finally met up!

the venue is, yes - ‘the apartment’ on the ground floor of the western courtyard, the curve. the name of the place suggests exactly that – eating in a setting made to look like the inside of an apartment.

a hip, urban loft-apartment, i must say – one that fits more to mr. khairul’s taste. none of that flowery laura-ashley-like wallpaper, wooden flooring, or high armchairs against a bookcase filled with jane austen – that is more to my taste!

no, this ‘apartment’ is more manhattan than worchester! it doesn’t try to be homely – it just presents the idea that we’re eating in various rooms in an apartment.

and one of the ‘rooms’ available for dine in is the bathroom! weird, quirky and fun, right?

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA the bathroom

the cute white chairs and modern lighting

i LOVE the theme, but i personally think they can do lots more with the concept – have high-ceiling window panes with flower beds, a more elaborate living room with tv sets and arm chairs and a more traditional kitchen rather than just shelves with ketchup bottles and kitchen utensils.

nevertheless, the place looks great!

the kitchen

since kazim was sleeping, and i didn’t bring a stroller, we took a seat at the ‘bedroom’, complete with daybed (where we placed kazim). the daybed itself is simply cute – with white victorian style wrought iron frame, throw pillows and plush mattress.

cozy!

okay, the place seemed fancy enough – how about the food then? did it match the awesome concept of the place?

we’ve had a very quick dinner at a&w hours earlier, so decided to stick to just desserts.

they offer variety – but not a lot of it. for example there’s cake – but not many choices of cakes. there’s parfait, but only with 2 types of fruits – you get what i mean?

oh, and the desserts all sound so fancy-fancy lah.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA apple & pear crumble with vanilla ice-cream

we ordered apple and pear crumble, served with vanilla ice-cream. too sweet for my taste! oh, and they could at least put something on the ‘crumble’ – it looks like kahfi had just squeezed some biscuit crumbs in a bowl!

we also ordered cheese cake. i LOVE cheese cake, but the simpler, the better. no excessive lemony taste, or thingamajigs in the cake, please! but this one has pineapples, and peaches in it. not a fan, but the cheese cake part itself is delicious. enough cheezy taste and just the right creamy texture to get me going for more bites.

and here’s our third dessert served in a tall glass – peach kiwi parfait – a combo of fresh fruits, sponge fingers and cream. loving it (tapi rasa macam bole buat sendiri!).

simple, yummy desserts – just enough for a sweet little reunion of old friends. the food is nothing to shout about – nice, edible, slightly boring, really – for a place with such a fun concept.

it was just plates of sweets, eaten over shared stories and gossips galore. till next year, my dearest friends. hope to see irda’s latest bouncing baby by then, and in time to see put off to do her doctorate, perhaps?

Syawal With Aunts & Cousins

after spending raya at kg. lalang and ipoh, it was time to head on to kuala lumpur to spend the rest of our raya, and our final days in malaysia before flying back to dubai! sob sob.

well, my mom has two other sisters. i call them auntyna, and the youngest one, cik. my hari raya continued at auntyna’s home in kl. it was a great, wonderful reunion with all my cousins. they’re bright, beautiful (noisy) people and i’m proud to call them family!

from left : nadhirah, rini, yaya, me & wanie – cousins from 3 different moms who are sisters!

my eldest sis yong was still in ipoh beraya, syima went beraya on her husband’s side after coming back from ipoh, while syida had already started working. so anak mak was only me and my youngest sister azot who’s still on a break from work.

my beloved aunts : cik & auntyna

these are my aunts. my mak’s sisters. i owe them a lot especially during the few years after mak passed away. this house was the very house i brought mr. khairul for the first time to meet my family, and especially abah!

love you lots, auntyna and cik! *big hug!*

rini with the red tudung is auntyna’s 2nd daughter, i’m mak’s 2nd born and yaya (black tudung) is cik’s 2nd child. kahfi is 2nd in the family too! kelab anak-anak nombor dua!

amin my cousin is the designated family physiotherapist! he’s even trained in massaging babies, and he’s really good at it! kazim sampai tertido

syima, or ngah, middle child, prim in purple.

it’s not exaggerating to say that this was finally the first photograph of all FIVE of us, that we took after a LONG, LONG time. i’ve always wanted to take the latest picture of me and my sisters, and i’ve always wanted to take picture on the grass of abah’s front lawn.

on the 3rd raya day, i got both.

Dua Syawal @ Ipoh

i was born and bred in ipoh. i go to school from standard 1 to 5 in ipoh. my first job was in ipoh. and my abah is still staying in ipoh. so to ipoh we go on the second day of syawal.

my younger sisters syida and azi were already there. they balik kampung using the new ETS (electric train services) from kl sentral to ipoh in 2 hours, exactly – without the hustle and worries of traffic jam during the festive season.

yong’s house is just 15 minutes away, so she just dropped by when i came. like me, syima also spend her first raya with the in-laws, and we were just waiting for her to come back to complete the picture.

*smile*

syida holding kahfi, me holding kazim, yong holding adam harris, and azi with nuna

here, khaleef and kahfi hung out with cousins abang haiqal and abang haqeem, as well as the girls sufya and nuna. yes – my abah has nine cucu and this raya – they too had a little reunion!

the picture below is undoubtly one of the cutest pictures for this 2010 raya! though kahfi was still the wriggling worm, khaleef was just eager to be part of the picture. will miss my nephews and nieces when i’m back in dubai…

* * *

as usual, the pulau tiga clan will also make abah’s home one of their must-beraya destination. it’s abah’s siblings – all 6 of them (7, if you include abah) were there. i was quite happy as i haven’t seen some of them for so long!

i didn’t even recognize some of my cousins! because the last time i saw them, they were khaleef’s age – and now that they’re all grown up workin and college-goin – i hardly recognize anyone!

should seriously considering a proper chart of family tree – with latest pictures, full names and whereabouts!

abah’s siblings standing from left : makchu, makcho, makyang, maknyah, abah, pak huri and pakcik kudus. my abah is pakcik podin.

how’s your raya so far? reunited with any relatives you haven’t seen in awhile?

Satu Syawal @ Kg Lalang

i’m back from a long RAYA hiatus, people! miss me? hihi. man, i think this is the longest i’ve been away from my blog. i guess spending syawal in malaysia this year had gotten me too excited!

we spent first syawal at khairul’s kampung in padang rengas, perak. it’s set to be a great syawal because of the kampung setting, the constant booms of mercun heard in the distance, the loud takbir from the nearby surau, and the unmistakable smell of my mom-in-law’s chicken rendang bubbling in the kitchen.

standing from left : me, mr. khairul, teh (diyana), tina, sofia, asrar, kay & wife with their daughter wafa sitting from left : mr. khairul’s mom holding kazim, khaleef and mr. khairul’s bapak holding kahfi

and for mr. khairul – a personal joy of not only having ALL his siblings under one roof to celebrate syawal together – but for himself – to finally celebrate hari raya together with his family for the first time after 2 years!

(2008, he went ahead to dubai before me and celebrated raya there. 2009, we both celebrated raya in dubai).

photo

i really miss my mak’s rendang, but my mom-in-law’s rendang was just as yummy. classic, traditional chicken rendang that goes perfect with the must-have lemang. this was a typical breakfast on a hari raya morning.

my boys were ALL BLACKS on hari raya. even kazim wore black-gray. no new, matching sampins though – i just used the ones i already have.

this was kahfi’s first raya in malaysia, and kazim’s first raya ever. it was quite chaotic even after the first few minutes – khaleef refused to wear sampin, and kahfi kept throwing down his songkok.

taking a decent picture of them was unthinkable! they were too excited running around! especially since their aunty sofia let them join her in her quest for duit raya from neighbouring houses!

mr. khairul’s youngest sister sofia holding her nephew kazim, with the cheeky khaleef

naughty, naughty boys! kahfi & khaleef

my adorable kazim!

photo my mr. khairul yang gagah dengan sampin malay college. sigh. someone donate some OTHER sampin please?

after breakfast of lemang and rendang,

after going around collecting duit raya,

after few families came and went beraya at the house,

began our ‘adventure’ of getting a decent family photo of our first syawal as a family of 5.

photo

first challenge : getting them out. getting them in proper sampin and songkok. getting them to stand still. we failed miserably on the last part.

yes, there were few moments of chasing around. thank goodness for flat hush puppies!

…and finally after lots of chasing, shouting out the boys’ names and making them stand still AND look at the camere – this was our best photo shoot of the lot. looked like i was the only one ready for the camera!

enjoy the rest of syawal!
