Foggy Drive Abu Dhabi-Dubai

gulfnews.com reported on feb 14 :

"according to the national centre of meteorology and seismology (NCMS), fog, accompanied by light winds, will blanket some parts of the country in the early morning (monday) before it started to clear up in the mid-day."

we drove back to dubai from abu dhabi around 2am, after sending his family to the airport for their flight back to malaysia.

it was a sight fit for a horror movie, or a creepy psycho-thriller. it was a scene straight out of stephen king's 'the shining' starring jack nicholson. and in reality, it was downright dangerous as mr. khairul carefully trying to drive straight on, hoping not to hit anything.

it was really teruk. foggy gile. we drove into nothingness, with only the roadlights guiding us - only to notice the hazard lights of a car upfront - with only about 50 meters in between! the visibility was so low, it was scary.

read more reports on these foggy days in dubai and abu dhabi on gulfnews.com - here and here.

in the 2nd article i linked, the police also reminded motorists to keep with these cautionary actions:

  • use warning signs and lamps
  • reduce speed
  • keeping safe distance between vehicles
  • stop when required

for those travelling at night or in the wee hours of the morning, drive safely and always be alert!

Until We Meet Again

yesterday, in the wee hours of the morning, mr. khairul bid farewell to his family. their abu dhabi-kl flight was at 3am, so off we went to send them to abu dhabi airport.

it was a bittersweet moment, remembering all the great times they had while in dubai, and at the same time dreading the hours they had left before boarding the flight.

the awesome oman cruise, al-ain zoo, sharjah aquarium, dubai's malls and seeing the wonderful landmarks of dubai like the burj khalifa and burj al-arab - i still can't believe they didn't go to al-tawasol for my favorite mandi rice!

for mr. khairul's mom, we thank her for her many, many, many delicious lauk day after day. my personal thanks for keeping the kitchen spick and span!

for mr. khairul's dad, we thank him for humoring khaleef when he sings the ben10 and lion king songs in that ridiculous 'accent' that he has!

for mr. khairul's siblings - tina, asrar and sofia - thanks a bunch for keeping the boys amused and entertained, temankan mandi pool and football, and many more playtime and laughter. the kiddos have also been very helpful around the house - thanks!

for mr. khairul's maklong, thanks for the wonderful dinner treat by the burj khalifa, with perfect view of the dancing fountain!

for mr. khairul's mom, there will be a second visit to dubai when our third kay comes out! as with kahfi, she will also 'supervise' my pantang this time around and help out whatever she can.

for that trip, hopefully mr. khairul's younger brother, his wife and the boys' cousin wafa will join in.

from left : asrar, mr. khairul holding khaleef, his bapak, maklong, his mak, tina and sofia

selamat jalan, everyone! it has been a loud, festive and meriah one month with you guys around!

and now, excuse me - somebody needs a hug and a tissue box sebab family dia dah balik malaysia...

Durian in Dubai

cravings?

call it what you want, but since mr. khairul's mom is here, why not take advantage and request my favorite dish from her before she leaves?

i wanted *pengat durian! i LOVE pengat durian. my abah loves it with pulut and santan, but i could eat slices and slices of bread dip in that sweet, gooey, lumpy pengat durian!

* pengat durian is a malaysian dessert made from just durian flesh, coconut milk, water and sugar! throw everything together and wait for it to boil. add pandan leaves to intensify the aroma!

in the end it should look like thick, gooey gravy with durian pulps - perfect as a dip for bread!

* * *

and so my beloved mr. khairul searched far and wide for a nice durian in dubai. found a small thai grocery in karama. and found a packet of frozen durian.

it costs him 30+ dirham (lebih kurang rm30 kita jugak)! and how many ulas durian inside?

just FOUR!

but hey, to get a veteran touch in cooking this dish - priceless, huh?

it was the night that mr. khairul was supposed to send his family to abu dhabi airport to catch the now defunct air-asia dubai-KL flight. however, my mom-in-law sempat lagi whip up a pot of pengat durian, good for days to come!

Wafi Gourmet : Dine By the Dancing Fountain of Burj Khalifa

mr. khairul's family is leaving in a few days, and his mak long took the chance to treat the whole family to dinner. we went to the biggest mall in the world - dubai mall.

we wanted to dine opposite the *dancing fountain, right by the tallest building in the world - the burj khalifa.

'the dubai mall dancing fountain' is a presentation of light, music and water - set on the man-made lake of burj khalifa. at one point, the pressurized air can shoot the water up to the height of 60 floors! the fountain 'dances' to three songs -

  • 'sama dubai; baba yetu, an award-winning song in swahili;
  • the arab world’s top-selling dance number shik shak shok;
  • and the signature piece of world-renowned italian tenor andrea bocelli, con te partiro (time to say goodbye)

it's stated in the official dubai mall website that 'the beam of light shining upward from the dancing fountain can be seen from over 20 miles away, and will be visible from space making it the brightest spot in the middle east, and quite possibly in the entire world.'

and yes, in dubai's 'tallest' and 'largest' tradition, this IS the largest dancing fountain in the world! watch my video at end this posting!

us beside the man-made burj dubai lake where the dancing fountain is

how to go? go inside dubai mall, and find wafi gourmet, or scoozi, or the foodcourt near these restaurants. walk out and you'll see the man-made lake.

when to go? everyday it starts at 6pm, and the dancing fountains will 'perform' every 20 minutes after that, until 10pm. on weekends, it'll go on for another hour.

* * *

there's a few fine and semi-fine dining restaurants along the man-made lake - and we chose to have dinner at 'wafi gourmet', a very popular lebanese restaurant in dubai. it's situated right next to the italian-japanese fusion restaurant, 'scoozi'.

how popular? well, it took us nearly an hour before we finally got our seats - the wait list to have a 9-person seater, AND to have those seats right in front of the dancing fountain and burj khalifa is LONG.

but with great food, great view and great company - it's worth the wait!

* * *

'wafi gourmet' is a lebanese restaurant with a wonderful setting - an endless choice of sweet arabian goodies to buy like in a souq - arabic market. it's like a market AND a restaurant.

kinda like 'marche' at the curve damansara, but not as fun, i think. marche tu kita pilih-pilih then dia masak kan - lagi seronok. in diorang jual untuk kita beli-beli bungkus! nways, more on that later one!

it's a lebanese restaurant, so its menu is full of kebab and skewer choices of chicken, lamb and meat. it also has lamb chops and grilled chicken with a LOT more meat dishes and salads with arabic names that i don't know the meaning of!

mr. khairul did the ordering, asking the waiter to recommend the perfect meal fit for nine newbies to 'wafi gourmet'. the waiter was warm and friendly and had no qualms in us taking his time to ask a lot of questions on the food, the ingredients and how they're prepared.

he then suggested a delicious mix-grill plate, arabic salad and a free-flow basket of nan bread as the basic popular choice among the patrons.

alright. we ordered that one, waited and see if he's right!

* * *

in the meantime, i took khaleef for a walkabout around the restaurant. the moment i saw that it has this 'souq' concept as well as a makan place, i had wanted to take pictures.

SALAD
our first stop is the salad bar; with plates and bowls of different types of arabic salad, and hummus. little bowls also contains ingredients for salads placed separately for choosy eaters!

SWEETS and CANDIES
right next to it is the lebanese delights corner where assorted arabic candies and sweets are wrapped individually in plastics, ready to be bought in grams. i tried one once and it tasted deliciously gooey, and not too sweet.

MINI FRUITS
i immediately thought of my sisters looking at this - why? (cantik la buat as hantaran! haha ~wink wink~) a lovely, oh-so-geramnye-tengok sugar candies made to look like miniature fruits! you can choose which one you like from the pile, or simply buy a box of ready-packed tiny fruits.

they're super cute and looked so real! real, but really tiny!

SKEWERS and KEBABS
right by the tiny fruit section, we came to the main part of the restaurant - one that has the meat skewers and kebabs. long metal sticks with chicken chunks and lamb cubes lined the counter for patrons to choose from. meat as it is, or meat with onions, or with capsicum - have it your way.

PRESERVED OLIVES
right next to this section was a group of barrels filled with olives of many sorts! olives with corn, olives with lemon, olives with ntah ape lagi! they're all different - but all olive based. rupa macam jeruk sikit.

DRIED FRUIT
right in front of the skewer and kebab counter were the dried fruit. presented so elegantly in a pyramid formation - they did look yummy!

LEBANESE SWEETS
then we saw another counter with sweets and candies, this time not wrapped in plastics but placed in those cups with put cupcakes in - what are they called? get them in cubes, round or oval - i can't pick a favorite!

CAKES and CHOCOLATES
yum! my favorite corner - an assortment of cakes and chocolates! from black forrest to tiramisu - nyum nyum nyum! there's even a 'it's-a-boy' chocolate perhaps for a baby shower.

DATES
what's a middle-east souq without dates, huh? one counter offered an endless choice of dates - different types of dates to dates with stuff in them - pistachio dates, choc dates and even dates with dried peach!

HERB and SPICES
one section had barrels of herb and spices - beautifully arranged in sacks, mountain-like so it's look so presentable.

by then our little 'field-trip' around 'wafi gourmet' souq was done, and off we went to our table to see if our order had arrived.

* * *

the mix-grill plate looked festive - with an assortment of chicken, lamb and meat skewers, arabic bread as the based, as well as cut-up pickle and a dash of - daun ape tu?

the mix-grill

the chicken, lamb and meat were all delicious - so well-marinated that the sweet-salty juices just escaped to your tastebud with every bite!

dig one with nan bread dip in hummous, and you got yourself an excellent meal for the night.

the endless basket of nan bread, small plate of hummous dip, and my favorite grilled chicken

though most of them loved the chicken skewers, i personally prefer their chicken grill. less sour, softer meat - just lovely for my taste.

we not only enjoy the food - but man, the view!

remember that i told you we waited almost an hour to get this great spot? well, eating right in front of the dancing fountain, just a few hundred meters from the tallest building in the world - fantastic view or what, huh?

kahfi and khaleef had fun munching nan bread, and were especially excited when the 20 minute gap was up and it's time for the dancing fountain performance.

* * *

khaleef and kahfi enjoying the dancing fountain

the calm, cool night, the festive ambiance of throngs of people waiting for the dancing fountain show, delicious dinner and in a company of family - what a great way to start the weekend!

us outside of wafi gourmet, just after dinner : from left : asrar, mr. khairul's mom, maklong, kahfi, youngest sis-in-law sofia, tina, mr. khairul's bapak, me & khaleef

thanks maklong, for the lovely dinner!

Dubai Festival City's Funny Signs

just woke up.

hari ni macam nak demam. tapi ngade nak blog jugak
. so this will be a short posting.

ok - dubai festival city is a shopping mall, and often a venue for big dubai events like 'dubai film festival', or 'dubai literature fest' and such.

one fine day we went and stumble upon a really amusing event - 'the signspotting project', a free show of the 'world's funniest signs', as discovered by travel writer and photographer doug lansky.

the funny signs that he collected were displayed along the marina promenade just outside the mall. the signs are made to look like the actual sign posts, so it's cool to read and smile at them as you take a walk.

ok.

demam sikit.

so just look at the pictures and enjoy the funny signs, ok!

cute. there's a sign, and underneath is a big rock boulder with explanation of the sign, and where it's taken from.

Baby On Board!

somebody in my tummy is doing kungfu. or ballet dancing. yeah you! buat tak tau pulak. hihi. don't get me wrong - it's my third time, and i'm still loving the kicking and wacha-ing inside. though it feels funny, and hurts some of the time, and man, it does one heck of a push on my bladder - but i'm still enjoying it!

you know this is just part of the baby being a part of you!

and speaking of babies, i've got two lovely new pwincesses to update today. though they've been born months ago, i got their latest picture just recently.

baby aliah, with mommy syu and bro hakeem

the first cutie is aliah insyirah, born 19 december 2009 to proud umi and baba syu and nazrul, and big bro hakeem. syu is my long-time skoolmate and fellow just10 buddy.

i know it's been too overdue, but here's a hefty congratulations to your 'newborn' girl - you have a pair now, syu!

sleep, my darling aliah insyirah!

hmm...since wani's baby is the last just10 juniors, does that mean aliah is the first just10 juniors fasa II? hihi.

read her mummy's experience of having her in her blog - click here!

with kak arin & her bambam zara, and omera's mak - liyana in july last year when i came back to malaysia

here's the next pwincess - and oh, get ready for one of the most classical names i've heard in a long time - omera sakinah, born 14 january 2010.

her mak, liyana was my malaysia hall melbourne housemate, a bubbly person, always teasing and laughing. oh, and she's a great cook as well!

she is also a very talented tukang jahit, having sewn bags, wallets, purses and many more - under her own brand name. check out her site here!

little omera sakinah

liyana, i know it has been a long wait before the arrival of omera sakinah, and how happy i was even knowing that you were pregnant. cherish her like your best artwork!

another just10 buddy anneeza is also expecting - her 2nd one - which is a great big deal since she had strongly and patiently managed to beat all odds and faced few challenges. if all goes well, my 3rd baby and anneeza's will be the 2nd and 3rd just10 junior fasa II! insyaAllah!

newlywed officemate haida is currently enjoying her surirumah status in china, following her husband - just like me. and her latest news is that there's gonna be three of them in china soon! congrats a bunch, and enjoy motherhood!

Jazz Festival @ The Walk

soaking in some jazz tonight!

dubai international jazz festival, which is a yearly thing brings together jazz crooners, and musicians from all over the globe! there's paid concerts at the dubai media city, and there's a free-for-all gigs right at the walk.

how can we NOT go? it's right by our doorstep, so to speak!

we had a walk with mr. khairul's siblings; asrar, tina and sofia - jalan-jalan in this awesome cool weather. it's a working night, and still throngs of people flocked 'the walk' to take advantage of the free jazz performance every night for the past week.

asrar, me, sofia, mr. khairul & tina : i LOVE our color combo! very earthy!

there's a huge stage set in the middle of the walk, with wooden picnic benches all over for interested audience.

each night there'd be two performances starting around 8.30pm, and the second performance takes over around 10pm.

when we came, an irish dude was doing his thang up on stage, crooning a couple of catchy jazz numbers, including sinatra's 'i got you under my skin'!

not bad! in fact he sounded lovely! his voice was as merdu and lepak as a jazz singer should be, fantastic vibrato and pronounciation - though it's funny that when he's done, klua irish accent dia - "thank you very moch.."

this 'free' jazz performance will end tomorrow, so for my dubai friends better come over tomorrow night to catch the final show before they draw the curtains.

tomorrow there'd be a beirut duo if i'm not mistaken, followed by a jazz singer or musician from egypt.

enjoy this clip i took of the irish dude, with mr. khairul enjoying his smelly cigar! kalo best, esok last day okay! gi tengok!
