Jalan-Jalan Jumeirah Beach

who's who?

it was an impromptu stop at the beach on our way to the mall of emirates. great weather - sun shining, cool breeze, calm waves - a perfect day to be out by the sea.

we were at the jumeirah beach, dubai.

let's play spot the places!
bur dubai - where we're currently staying
sheikh zayed road - where mr. khairul's office is
deira - where my fav mandy restaurant is - hafta cross a creek - see?

jumeirah beach is said to be the most famous and popular beach in dubai. it is a long stretch of beach on the arabian gulf. awesome landmarks include the most expensive hotel in the world - burj al-arab and the first man-made island; the palm jumeirah - which also houses the latest addition to dubai's posh hotels, the atlantis (just launched its 'opening' party attended by tons of celebrities, said to be the last *party* of the decade - org lain dah takde duit nak buat party gile gempak mcm tu!).

dubai in 2008
can you see burj al-arab at a distance in the pict with mr khairul & khaleef?

from where we stopped, we could see a blury burj al-arab and the atlantis from a great distance - yet we were still able to make out the shape since its so recognizable, especially the sail-shaped burj al-arab.

cars lined up along the beach side; quite a number yet it is not too crowded. the beach is just amazing - the clean white sand - you just wanna throw off your shoes the minute you set eyes on it. and the water - the water was just a sight-for-sore-eyes - a beautiful blue? gorgeous green? khaleef just went nuts and ran all the way to the end where the waves meet the sand.

then he went over the edge

..and dug up some beach sand

......then he threw some into the water.

repeat.

khaleef. khaleef. khaleef.

we took out the beach ball and mr khairul hit some shots with khaleef. then khaleef went back to throwing dug-up beach sand into the water. he wore his ben10 bday t-shirt - if not for that i'm sure he would have jumped right in.

speaking of jumping right in - noone was seen swimming in the water - it was too cold! (dubai slowly entering its winter season right now) the breeze was enough to chill us to the bone - let alone jumping into the sea-water. khaleef would turn up mr ice-man...

dubai in 2005
abah rilek je kat jumeirah beach hotel

actually i've been to jumeirah beach few years back with abah and my sisters on our holiday trip to dubai. it was right before i got engaged - bought some kain to make the baju pengantin. only yong didn't join us for this trip - i think it's because her second born, haqeem was still too young. i remember walking along the jumeirah beach with syima, syida and azi, took some shots againts burj al-arab and then we lepak at jumeirah beach hotel to use the toilet!

however, it is comforting to know that however beautiful and clean the jumeirah beach is, we too have our dear own pulau perhentian beach and pulau sipadan beach - that are no less breath-taking in comparison. just to name a few.

She Beats Me!

kak arin & me - breathing in the summer breeze in melbourne

before you think this entry is about an abusive friend, lemme settle your mind that it's NOT - and i wanna tell you that a gal pal of mine, kak arin (we stayed together in malaysia hall melbourne) is as heavily pregnant (op, WAS heavily pregnant) as i am and after check-ups and ultra-sounds discovered that we have the SAME edd (estimated due date). give and take one or two days.

and she has given birth to a sweetie pie pwincess yesterday afternoon!

see! she beats me!

'zara aliyah' was welcomed by mommy and daddy along with kak long hanum. now she has two girls while i'm about to have two male terrorists around the house!

it's a mixed feeling of gladness of a safe and uncomplicated birth to a healthy baby - and slight fear and excitement that my turn would come just about any second soon!

any second now.

whenever you're ready, k jr jr. bapak has set up your crib and abang's baby garbs are nicely folded in your basket.

mak will be waiting.

in the meantime, i'm sending flowers and chocs and balloons down your way, kak arin - congratulations and hope to see your two girls soon!

Tissues Not for the Sniffles

my profile reads 'a crab who keeps junks from the past'.

now i'm about to reveal the first of my list of 'collections' which is also my favourite. i'm proud of each one - so don't judge me ok!

first and foremost, i collect tissues. tissues, serviettes, paper napkins - call 'em what you want. to date, i have about 468 tissues from all over the world - ok i added that all over the world part - but there are tissues from the faraway places i've been to.

i keep all 468 tissues in 3 boxes; one for rectangular ones, another for square tissues and finally a 'holiday box' for tissues i get from hotels and airlines.

most of the tissues i got on my own, but a good amount also came from those thoughtful people who made the effort to save a piece of tissue when they go makan, had the gentleness to keep it nicely from wrinkles til the time comes to hand it over to me. anyone who has ever given me a tissue they had kept would know how much i appreciate the effort. THANKS!

i printed a list of all my tissues, put in alphabetical order, (of course i keep track!) along with whom i went with, or in a case where i was given the tissue - who gave it; followed by the place where i got it from.

e.g: captain cook cruise family sydney

my list, my 3 precious boxes and the little soaps i put to keep 'em fresh smelling
  • it's easy to get, (free for the taking, you can always ask for more, and you can even grab one without actually eating at that particular makan place)
  • a little harder to keep (it's paper, it's flimsy, it's easily torn so i gotta keep it in a secure place where it can't be crumpled or torn - or get wet!)
  • and i think hardest to maintain (placed without care and you'll get yellowish colouration around the edges - i keep those small hotel soaps in each boxes and it keeps the tissues smelling fresh all year round)

best of all, it holds memories!

each tissue is unique. it's taken from all sorts of nook and corners; with different company of people for different occasions; eating all sorts of yummies.

out of 468 of mine, i took out just a smidgen to demonstrate how these tissues can hold little gems of memories in their folds...

1. the putra world trade center -
got this when wani (a good friend of mine) and i berkampung at PWTC to catch a glimpse of our then PM, Dr. M during the perhimpunan agung UMNO that year. it was really an unforgettable experience for we didn't JUST see him - we barged through his bodyguards, shook hands with him, got his autograph AND got our picture published at the FRONT PAGE of utusan malaysia the next day.

2. dave's deli, black canyon coffee and schlotzky deli -
dave's deli was not quite in my list of yummy makan place - but it's really really special as it was the place where mr khairul and i met for the first time - a rendezvous planned by my youngest sister. black canyon coffee was the place where i first belanja my abah with my first pay. it was father's day. schlotzky deli (susahnye nak eja!) was syida's first working place while waiting for her SPM result and got that when we kacau her at work!

3. indulgence - a quaint little cafe in ipoh, went there with my buddy niraku and i distinctly remember having this simple dessert of ice-cream with grilled banana. a fantastic fusion of hot and cold!

4. the chakri palace - a girls' night out getaway for me and my theater gal pals - put and irda. i always remember this place as where we'd hang out after a theater show @ the actors' studio or istana budaya.

5. kopikau - nearby kopitiam occasionally supplying breakfast for me and my officemates in puchong. i love working with them and now that i'm in dubai, i'm missing the fun working environment esp. lunch time!

6. pakeeza - my wedding party caterer. ;-) 'nuff said.

7. sunway medical - where i gave birth to my first; fresh prince of kl - khaleef khairul.

these tissues are taken from the 'holiday' box which i kept tissues from hotels and airlines. also a treasure box of memories...

1. eastin hotel - used to be a favourite hotel for mak and abah whenever they come over to KL.

2. boulevard hotel - it's adjacent to the mid valley megamall and we always had great fun staying at this hotel as we can come and go to the mall as we please, even catch a midnight movie show as our hotel room is just an elevator away!

3. seri costa hotel - fantastic! a small quaint hotel in the heart of melaka but always a lovely memory as it is our first ever ever holiday with khaleef. it's also where we got to know the BEST ikan bakar place in the world - sg duyung!

others are priceless as it includes interesting bits in their folds - not merely a name and a place or a tagline.

1. like this piece i got from subway, there is a list of calories or carb you'd be taking with their sandwiches.

2. a cute one from ben & jerry i got when the whole family went to US to send yong off to study in purdue, indiana - include a reminder to not waste their napkins 'please use only what you need'.

3. and this one from pizza hut is especially unique as it has chinese characters on it - gotten from hong kong.

the rest of my tissues i group in types - i've got those fancy party tissues - including a precious one of shrek!

there are wet tissues packed in plastics, mostly from japan given by my bro-in-law din when he went there for a business trip.

then there are those tissues which came from the SAME brand but different branches or at different time. like i have 9 from nando's - printed in different wordings and patterns, taken from malaysia, melbourne, auckland and south africa. also have 9 varieties of KFC tissues - different tissues printed according to the theme they have at that time - like the 'KFC 30 Years', or when they did the campaign 'What's Your KFC Moment?'

sigh.

ok, so wanna help me reach 500? gimme some tissues!

The Book Bug

i love to read.

when i was younger, and it was past bedtime, i read under the covers using a torchlight. once i was caught coz i kept it running until daylight came. it was, i have to admit, a good way to make sure you wear glasses at 8* - but i wouldn't change it for the world. it was really a most wonderful experience - just you and the world in the book.

*alhamdulillah, my eyesight is still fine!

when khaleef hogs the tv - mickey mouse clubhouse is on - and mr khairul has the notebook on his lap, depriving me of the net - i always tell him 'be thankful that your wife likes to read'. no tv, no internet - and yet a good book is an equally satisfying alternative. i can have the theme song to ben10 blaring at the background, with mr khairul complaining about the current events while he browsed the net - and yet be in my own world of storybook characters...

i've wanted to write about this for the longest time. the Dubai Million Book Challenge got me thinking about this passion of mine. i was so into this IDEA, not just because of the immensity of its execution - but because eventhough it's so simple in idea, it just takes one single organization to step up and JUST DO IT.

the task is easy enough - ask kids to read a certain amount of books, make sure parents keep track and teachers make notes - and create a community service behind it too - like a huge donation. sounds so easy to think of, and to run but dubai stepped up and started DOING it and that i have to applaud.

this big idea is called the 'Million Book Challenge'
students all over UAE must read ONE MILLION BOOKS in 2 weeks. possible? the challenge is already over, btw but i was just wondering whether they achieved the number of books* - and that reminded me of this entry that i wanted to write about.

*at the end of the challenge, UAE kids collectively read 1,323,218 books

it's initiated by Dubai Cares, a charity establishment that will buy a new book according to the number of books the kids are able to read and donate it to children in need around the world. this way, the kids of uae can 'help transform the lives of less privileged kids around the world', according to His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates, and Ruler of Dubai.

rules of the challenge
One of the rules of this challenge was the kids are told about 'books that count', and 'books that don't count'. the cutest thing was in the list of 'books that count' are "Books read on the bus, in the car, on an airplane, in a hotel and under the bed covers with a flashlight.."

this is an official list of rules - released by Dubai Cares itself, and it includes books 'read under the bed covers with a flashlight'! which i think shows how the organizers were able to relate to the kids and understand their reading habits without making it sound like a negative thing. that's what kids do! had they written 'books read in class' or '..with teachers/parents' - yawn!

another interesting rule under the list of 'books that do not count' is 'books read instead of doing your homework'!

my reading influences
i seem to have more time to read when i was younger. less responsibility? i have to give credit to my mak and abah for my interests in reading. mak, as she was an avid reader herself and abah for taking us to the library every other weekend.

my mak was a reader. oh, yes she was - more than i will ever be. she read a variety of authors and genres. while i stick to ghost stories and tales of the unexpected, she read all that and more. she was the one who introduced me to stephen king (to be honest she introduced me to tons of authors including grisham but only the king rules and caught my attention!)

she really wanted me to read adam's 'watership down' - a tale of rabbits searching for a new place to live - and until the day she passed away i never did get around to read it. i still remember she said she wanted me to read the book ASAP...just so that she would have someone to talk about the book with.

abah had a different influence on me and my sisters. he encouraged reading in a subtle way. he made an effort to take us to the tun razak library, ipoh every weekend, and was willing to spend hours there, looking for books for himself and, most of the time waiting for US to finish picking our books.

going to the malls mean a pit-stop at the bookstore. it's simply a must. he did not mind spending a few RMs on books - not always, but often enough to keep us happy!

in my opinion, my sister syida has the most similarity to me in terms of her choice in books. yong is more like mak, trying every genre til she gets a good one while syima is more text-booky (she's the brainiest one anyways). azi, on the other hand tries more chick-lit and malay literature. any one by ahadiat akashah is a good one for teens.

so this is a small thank you for making me a reader. i wish i was half the persons that you are to my kids, and make them see the magic of reading a good book.

my reading habits

1> reading under the covers with a torchlight. still do it - but worse! with the hp lights!

2> reading right before sleeping - i'll be reading until i'm too tired to follow the adventures of the characters

3> reading over a snack - or worse - a hot bowl of maggi mee - risky!

4> reading during commercial break - good use of wasted time waiting for your movie to come on again

5> i CAN NEVER read in a moving vehicle - but i was able to on the lrt - for unknown reasons - and it's nice that in spite of the crowd and the awkwardness of accidentally making eye-contact with a stranger sitting opposite you - you can still get away, your eyes buried deep in a good book

6> i did read during my confinement when i had khaleef - sometimes aloud especially when i had to hold him to sleep (you cant go out, cant eat out, you cant do pretty much anything physical - so sitting around reading is just the thing to do!) hey he should be thankful when i read aloud, coz when i dont read, i'll sing...and that could be more traumatic!

7> i used to list out the words that i don't understand and looked it up later - but i stopped doing that coz it disturbs the flow of the story and my grasp of the world in the story - i learn how to go along with the whole sentence, try to figure out the meaning in the context of the sentence - and hope that i'm right!

why i like stephen king and terry pratchett
if you have read stephen king's 'IT', `Salem's Lot' and 'Shawshank Redemption', you are sure to know how versatile King is. the three masterpieces range from a psychological terror (IT is basically about your fears and past haunting you), classic vampire to a tale of friendship born in adversity (the movie staring morgan freeman is the ONLY movie that did justice to a king's book, other than 'Stand By Me' - google it up!).

my king's collection - my fav would be IT, misery, 'salem's lot, christine and the shorties

i love plain ol ghost stories with the length of just 2 pages - stories that get to the point quick and yet scares the hell outta ya - like one day there was a man walking around and he came to a crossroad and saw a man, then he asked for the time and the man answered 'it was past midnight when i left hell' and yet i can't help but be engrossed king's rich description of people in his stories. he sees people (wait, is that line from titanic?).

some of my collection of ghost stories - great company on a dark stormy day

terry pratchett was introduced to me by a friend much later - and i wondered where had he been all my life - coz he's freaking funny! when this friend of mine described his obsession of terry pratchett, i couldnt understand it - he was blabbering away about a 'discworld carried on top of a giant turtle' and the book is about stuff and people on this 'discworld'.

hook on pratchett too? please contact me so we can discuss what's so freakin great about this man's work!

so? and yet, a chance meeting with one of pratchett's books at the IIU library got me started. and i am hooked ever since. if you wanna try pratchett, go for the discworld series coz the characters will just charm you - a human raised by a dwarf so he thinks he's just an oversized dwarf; a vampire who swore off blood and now trying to make an honest living by being a flash photographer but turned to dust everytime he takes a picture; death itself who speaks only in CAPITAL LETTERS; and many other weirdly interesting characters that colour the 'discworld' in all its wonders and oddities.

so if you like good humor in a fantasy world of dwarfs, trolls and an orang utan librarian at the local university - then try pratchett.

fancy a comic strip?

are you one of those people who go straight to the comic sect of a newspaper? of course, laughter is the BEST medicine - so i have my own share of fav comics. calvin and hobbes is one - absolutely adorable and amusing in the way calvin thinks. he thinks about big issues from the eyes of a kid, and has hobbes knocking some sense into him.

and then there's 'the far side' - absolutely wacky, zany and ridiculous in the most wonderful way. in one single comic frame, he is able to depict crazy humor in the most normal, everyday things.

shakespeare rocks!

ok, yeah - i'm into shakespeare - i believe that when you really put your knowledge of the basic english language into gear, you WILL BE able to understand shakespeare and not be dissuaded by the 'thee's and 'thou's. my fav is absolutely without a doubt - 'twelfth night' and 'macbeth'.

if you wanna brave shakespeare and yet want something light - and have BASIC knowledge of a few or at least ONE of his plays (i know you're all thinking of romeo and juliet right?) you can try this one on top by the reduced shakespeare company - calling it a spoof actually degrades the work - as it is more of a tribute than a spoof - it combines ALL of shakespeare works in a 40 mins play! what a feat! and it's SUPER funny!

unpredictable road with roald dahl

ok, syida! remind me to return this to you ASAP

roald dahl is known more for his children's books. amazing work! but if you want a nicely told story with simple words and easily digestable description AND with a really shocking, unexpected ending cleverly twisted at the end - try roald dahl's work for the adults.

you would want more.

hey, visit my bookshelf! http://www.shelfari.com/syigim or pick up a book today!

Pendinding Power

i miss my sisters.

azi, syigim, syimee, syima and syida

yong is busy with school and the younger ones are all on holiday in bali with my dad. why cant they just come to dubai instead?

so come back, already! my skype is void of activity without those chipmunks around. with them, i could just leave my skype on while they watch me cook and demonstrate ala cooking show.

anyways, for anyone who missed this interestingly creepy story in The Star (my fav daily local newspaper) last weekend, here's a copy i pasted from http://thestar.com.my - enjoy!

Burglar who picked the ‘wrong’ house

KEMANAN: A burglar entered a house-turned-grocery shop, thinking he was in for a killing. He nearly got himself killed instead.

The owner, who was away to celebrate Hari Raya Haji returned home yesterday morning to find the burglar trapped in the house for 72 hours without food and water.

The intruder was fatigued and dehydrated when the owner and his wife returned to the shop in Kampung Binjai from their hometown in Kota Baru.

The couple, in their early 50s, found the burglar lying in a room, clasping his hands in an apologetic gesture for his wrongdoing.

The owner, instead of calling the police, decided to call an ambulance to rush the burglar to the nearest hospital.

When interrogated later, the 36-year-old burglar told investigating officers that he had sneaked into the house after realising the owner was out.

The burglar, who entered via the back door, claimed that he was blinded once he was inside and felt like he was in a cave.

“Each time I wanted to flee, I felt a ‘supernatural figure’ shoving me to the ground,’’ he told police.

He claimed this was his first time experiencing such trauma during a break-in.

The burglar had no choice but to stay put in the room for three days as his shouts for help were in vain.

Kemaman Deputy police chief Deputy Supt Abdul Marlik Hakim Johar said the couple lodged a police report on the same day.

He said the burglar was warded at the Kemaman Hospital and his condition is stable.

uuuuuuuuuuuu...are you having goose-bumps too? man, when i first read it - i cannot help but wonder what kind of person is this 'grocer', really or from where did he obtain the 'help' to guard his house while he was away?

i remember a friend of mine relating a story of her neighbour staying right behind her house - and even when the whole family is away for holiday, there would be sounds of talking and even cooking coming from the supposedly empty house...

i think the fact that this story was featured in The Star, makes it creepier coz it's real news, as opposed to the same kind of stories appearing in tabloids or those small, bite-size B-grade mags you can buy in puduraya with a freaky hand-drawn picture as covers.

man, i'm a sucker for good ol-fashioned ghost stories and tales of the supernatural, and this seems to be a perfect one for a dark stormy day...

I am a Mandy Addict!

my name is syazrin syigim sharifuddin, and i am a mandy addict.

i eat mandy yesterday. and last weekend. and the weekend before that. and the one before that. i eat mandy every single weekend! at the rate we're going, our favourite mandy restaurant SHOULD grant us a loyalty card or something...

for the clueless, mandy is a type of rice-dish that is very popular in dubai; some say it is THE signature dish of dubai.

however, a little research enlightened me that it actually originated from yemen. (where chandler went to get away from janice..) of course, it has the usual ingredients - basmati rice (fragrant rice) + mixed of spices, with meat or chicken - served on top of the rice - all served together in one single plate. if you're thinking of the briyani rice, the difference is that briyani originated from south asia; more popular in india and pakistan while mandy is more mid-east.

the most interesting thing about mandy rice is the preparation part. it is cooked using an ancient technique of cooking - in an earthen pot which is IMMERSED in a charcoal-filled hole in the ground! - probably done when man first discovered fire! masak dalam tanah tu!

imagine the big clay pot where they make ayam tandoori in our local mamak in malaysia - ok, take that and bury it in the ground to make mandy!

"..the meat of mandy rice is cooked in the tandoor, which is a special kind of oven. tandoor usually is hole dug in the ground and covered inside by clay. charcoal is placed in the tandoor. then the meat is suspended inside the tandoor without touching the charcoal. after that the whole tandoor is closed without letting any of the smoke to go outside." ~wikipedia

how about that!

in my opinion, the best place to get a mandy rice around dubai is near the clock tower in deira - al-tawasol (now they really SHOULD give us a loyalty card or something!). but to be fair i've only tried two places; the other one is in sharjah - also worth-mentioning.

when i first arrived, mr khairul brought me & my parents to al-tawasol. seems unimpressive from outside - practically plain-looking - nothing significant about it at all.

once you enter, you are greeted by a host of smiling waiters clad in white shirt and red vest. quite presentable. right near the entrance, you can see a wide-open carpeted section for the males - all would just bersila around, the groups of males separated by pillows. right adjacent to it is the female section; separated by a curtain.

if your group consists of male and female, you would best continue walking towards the end of the restaurant, where you would find a few 'tents'. take off your shoes and walk in - make yourself comfortable. wall to wall carpet, pillows to sit on, lean on and in khaleef's case, to jump on, golek-golek on and to make bridges and fort with - it's really a wonderful place to bring little kids along - since they might be noisy, restless and want to move around a lot - and also add some privacy to a quiet family time.

here, mandy is served with a plate of 'salad' consists of cucumber cut into half, a slice of capsicum, some leafy 'ulam' and lemon slices for taste. (modeled enthusiastically by my buddy niraku) also served together is a small bowl of its special 'sambal' - blended chilli - and what i like most about it is it gives the 'spicy' taste but it's not malay-sambal spicy. just nice. mr khairul would gobble up no less than 3 bowls of those with his mandy...

want some more 'salad' or order another pepsi? just press a button on the wall of the 'tent' and a waiter would come along. going on friday after prayers means you probably have to wait longer for service or eat faster (if you're considerate of others!) - the place would be packed!

i love the rice so much that there is no surprise that it is in the must-do list when my best buddy niraku came over just last week. her feedback was of course, positive! how dare you wonder!

i have GOT to get over this addiction for the sake of mr khairul's ever-expanding tummy and mine too! well, i AM a recovering McD addict and haven't been craving it ever since i'm in dubai - but it shows that IT CAN BE DONE!

;-)

having said that, come over to dubai and try mandy...

Must See, Must Hear, Must Do!

mr khairul is a sucker for international movies. while my dvd collection ranges from disney movies, blockbuster hits like harry potter & jack sparrow's adventures to periodic jane austen's, his would be a wider variety of global movies from spanish action film, korean thriller to italian mob drama.

so it was no surprise when he forwarded me the booklet for the Dubai International Film Festival provided by Mr Consulate General himself - a complete collection of speeches and schedule of what's coming up in the film festival, running from today til 18th of december.

it's one thing to have an international film festival in my home country malaysia, and another thing having an international film festival while staying in another country - and see MALAYSIA as one of the participating movies.

too bad there's only one - and only a shorty. but i hope i can catch it on screen.

with its catchphrase, 'Bridging Cultures, Meeting Minds' it boasts the biggest collection of movies from all over the world - from short films to documentaries, from blockbusters to independent movies - all 180 of them from 66 countries!

interestingly enough, the classification of the movies include even 'brief nudity' and 'brief sexual scene' aside from the usual 'contains adult themes', 'contain coarse language' and 'drug use'. i didn't think UAE would allow ANY movies with the need to put the word 'sexual' or 'nudity' in its classification. but...they've got them!

the movies are going to be screened all around dubai's cinemas including the one in the ex-biggest mall in the world - the CineStar @ Mall of the Emirates.

there will be a session where audiences can participate in a live discussion with renowned directors - and one of them being terry gilliam, director of brad pitt's twelve monkeys - which happens to be one of my favorite movies of all time! sigh. i remember participating in such a talk in 2005 - with award-winning director yasmin ahmad and afdlin shauki no less! i remember the animator for our own malaysian 'sang kancil' animation was also present! back then i was still working as an editor for a youth mag.

alrite, i went through the schedule and these are the movies i hope to see! unfortunately some are rated +18 and +15 so i guess those are out of the question since we definitely take khaleef along. but the movies under 'cinema for children' are sure to be a must-see for our little one...

Meggie is 12-years old, and is thoroughly impatient with her father, who has always refused to read stories to her! But what Meggie is unaware of, is that her father Mo (Brendan Fraser) is possessed of a rare and powerful talent - when he reads a book, he can make the characters emerge from the story into real life. But there is a danger: for every character brought to life from a book, a real person disappears into its pages. 14/12 Souk Theater, 18:15
