Funny Story : Smile in Ramadhan!

got this from my sister who shared it from yasmin mogahed’s facebook page. hihi.

two christian missionaries, David and Michael, were lost in a scorching desert, dying of thirst and hunger when they saw a mosque up front.

David said: “Michael, let’s pretend we are Muslims. otherwise, we will not get any food or water and we will die. my name will be Ahmed. what will be your name?”

Michael refused to change his name.

when both of them reached the mosque, the Imam received them well and asked their names.

David: “my name is Ahmed.”

Michael: “my name is Michael.”

the Imam turned to his helpers and said: “please bring food and water for Michael.” then he turned to David and said: “brother Ahmed, Ramadan Mubarak.

honesty prevails, so do not lie yah! ok chill, read, smile or laugh, it’s just a joke – have a pleasant ramadhan, people!

KLCC : Best Kenny Rogers for Iftar

both my baby sisters work near KLCC so it was just easier to buka puasa somewhere there. we ended up at kenny rogers in KL convention center – that memorable place where i had a date with anuar zain last april. hihi. klik sini untuk cerita penuh!

oppp lari topik pulak.

let me just state for the record that i had a great time breaking fast with my sisters. loved it. it’s hard to get all three together because of their crazy working hours – but here we are. ramadhan miracle!

DSC00365

syida, me, azi – sisters!

i’d say if you wanted to buka puasa at ANY kenny rogers, this is a great one to go to :

1) the surau is practically next door – not right next but in a few steps and you’re there. fairly spacious, very comfy, with enough telekung and sejadah to use

2) it’s in KL convention center which is connected to KLCC. most people would just check out makan places in KLCC for iftar, leaving THIS kenny rogers less crowded. some people comes at 7.15 and still able to get seats

3) i don’t know about other kenny rogers, but in this branch, if you get your side-dishes mixed up or got the wrong one – instead of changing your plate, they would just GIVE you an extra bowl of that side-dish. wah! rezeki bulan ramadhan!

DSC00370

berbuka with the my two favorite couples again – my baby sisters and my bros-in-law. bakal pengantin azot and faiz; and pengantin basi syidot and nash. i just sat at the head of the table, like a CEO. haha.

oh, and yes, it’s just me. mr. khairul is back in dubai to resume work, and we’ll reunite a few days before raya. missing him. hope he reads this.

Pertama Kali Cuba Burger Bakar : WOW!

dari dubai lagi aku asyik baca, tengok gamba and dengar pasal makanan ni : BURGER BAKAR.

ape yang best sangat burger bakar ni? selama ni pun burger memang la dibakar kan – digrill. jadi apa istimewanya BURGER BAKAR dari burger ramly atau burger otai yang selama ni aku dok makan? ni yang buat teringin ni!

burger bakar ni, daging burgernya dibuat sendiri – tu sebab saiznya best semacam, dan bukanlah daging burger beku yang kita beli kat supermarket tu. cara masaknya pun berlainan.

DSC00332

kejap lagi aku citer pasal burger ni ok!

* * *

aku tau burger bakar kaw-kaw kat wangsa maju tu khabarnya ialah pelopor burger bakar ni. diorang yang mula-mula memperkenalkan konsep burger bakar di malaysia. adik bongsu aku penah pegi cuba burger bakar kaw-kaw. katanya memang sedap betul, tapi beratur punyalah lama, kalah nasi kandaq beratoq kat penang tu! hihi. adik aku beratur lebih 3 jam baru dapat order, belum kira dapat burgernye lagi.

so adik aku yg lagi sorang syimot ajak aku cuba burger bakar ABANG BURN kat ramal junction foodcourt, kajang. katanya ‘burger bakar abang burn ni’ ialah burger bakar terpantas – tak lebih 15 minit burger siap. nak challenge burger bakar kaw-kaw la ni, yang kena menunggu hampir 3 jam tu (menurut adik aku punya pengalaman sendiri).

kitorang pergi dalam minggu terakhir sebelum bermula ramadhan.

direction ke ramal junction foodcourt. source : facebook page burger bakar abang burn

ramal junction foodcourt ni kawasannya luas macam tempat parking kereta, dikelilingi gerai-gerai yang menjual pelbagai makanan yang sedap gile termasuklah ‘satay willy’ yang dah ramai sgt org suruh aku cuba. itu next ok! hihi.

sebab kawasannya besar, tempat duduk pun banyak dan kalau tak cukup, ade akak-akak yang akan bukakkan meja lipat tu supaya bole duduk. jangan risau. besar, selesa dan open-air. cuma kalau hujan tu mungkin problem sikit, sebab kawasan berbumbung cuma kat keliling gerai-gerai tu je…

DSC00316a

aku la tu, kat anak panah tu! hihi. tapi tu sekadar gaya ok. lepas aku amik gamba ni, adik ipar aku din ambik-alih dan dia yg beratur di sepanjang barisan ni, untuk buat pesanan burger dan belanja sekali. yay! thanks, bro!

DSC00317

menu memang best!

macam biase pertama skali korang pilih le daging atau ayam. bukan setakat single – double ngan triple pun ade! nak extra daging pun boleh! aku tengok daging burger yang single pun dah tebal gile dah – aku tak bole la bayangkan org yang nak makan TRIPLE burger bakar!

secara kasarnya rata-rata pilihan ade berbentuk cheese atau cheesy. perbezaannya? burger bakar ‘cheese’ ade satu keping keju je, dan kalau burger bakar ‘cheesy’ pulak ade DUA keping keju, ditambah pulak dengan ‘cheesy sauce’.

pastu kalau amik yang ade perkataan ‘SPECIAL’, korang bole pilih nak tambah beef bacon slice, atau turkey ham. memang sedap!

bole jugak tambah ‘SUPREMO’. kalau korang pilih mana-mana burger bakar ‘supremo’, kat bahagian atas daging burger diorang taruh cendawan goreng, kat bahagian bawah pulak bawang goreng. WOW. aku yang tengah dok taip ni pun terbayang-bayang!

akhirnya – aku ambik ‘burger bakar daging abang burn cheesy special supremo’ – serius! sekali sekala, bebeh!

DSC00332

aku punya – burger bakar abang burn special supremo! burger bakar dengan kepingan keju, turkey ham (yang terkeluar macam lidah tu hihi), cendawan goreng, bawang goreng dan sos keju yang banyak

aku senaraikan item dalam menu tu bukan apa – masa pegi ari tu, ada jugak pelanggan yang tak bersedia – dah sampai giliran dia depan kaunter, baru terhegeh-hegeh nak tengok menu. masa tu baru nak pilih. masa tu la baru nak tanya ini apa itu apa.

maaf bahasa aku mungkin agak kasar tapi hello? dah la barisan panjang gile kat belakang, dia bole lagi rilek-rilek tengok menu baru nak pikir-pikir ape nak makan.

aku ngan adik aku awal-awal seblom beratur lagi dah pegi depan tengok menu (menu melekat kat cermin kaunter), kami pilih ape nak order, kemudian baru beratur. bila sampai giliran kami, senang dan cepat je la buat order. baru la licin peralihan barisan tu!

kepada pelanggan-burger-bakar-yang-kena-beratur-panjang – sila bersedia la nak order ape. bole jimat masa!

DSC00319

5 sebab aku suka burger bakar abang burn ni :

1) daging burger tu sedap marinadenya, cukup rasa dan yang paling penting cukup masak dan takde merah-merah kat bahagian tengah burger

2) ade cendawan goreng kat dalam burger tu. aku sangat kagum sebab pertama kali makan burger ade cendawan goreng tepung kat burger. aku sangat suka segala macam cendawan

3) sos keju yang melimpah ruah. tak kedekut. bagus. moga bertambah-tambah rezeki korang

4) pekerja yang beruniform kemas tapi santai. juga mesra-pelanggan

5) burger sedap tapi tak payah beratur sampai 3 jam!

cuma yang tak best sebab burger bakar abang burn ni tak bubuh seciput sayur-sayuran pun. kasi la salad ke, coleslaw ke. timun pun takde. sebab aku suka salad. aku suka coleslaw! tapi timun takde takpe. aku tak le minat sangat timun dalam burger.

lagi satu, silalah bekalkan TISU yang melampau sikit ok. sebab setiap saat asyik nak mengelap je. lepas 4-5 bite, aku dah tak kira dah. comot pun comot lah! hihi. enjoy!

DSC00320

DSC00325

geram aku tengok burger daging gemuk-gemuk ni! nyummy!

DSC00322

* * *

adik ipar aku din & my sis syimot

terima kasih kat adik ipar aku din ngan adik aku syimot sebab dengan penuh semangat bawakkan aku ngan adik bongsu azot ke ramal junction foodcourt ni utk cuba burger bakar abang burn. siap belanja lagi. siap nak suruh pegi awal lagi takut burger habis. best!

tip #1 dari adik ipar aku din : kalau nak makan burger bakar ni jangan bungkus bawak balik nanti soggy gile dan semua benda dah senget-benget dan terkeluar-klua. lebih perfect kalau makan kat situ jugak panas-panas dan semua bahan-bahan tersusun indah. hihi.

* * *

ok, bila pulak nak berbuka burger bakar ni?

Hawker Food @ myNEWScafe @ 1 Utama

“eat, drink, read.”

that’s the tagline of ‘myNEWScafe’ at one utama. the idea is that they offer patrons a wide variety of magazines to choose from – to read while they eat.

now this is not really a breakthrough concept haha – a lot of restaurants have magazines lying around for customers to read, but in myNEWScafe, this is their central concept, as you can see from one of the pictures i have below, where a long magazine rack adorned the whole side of one of the walls.

my youngest sis azot and i went shopping for home stuff the other day and had lunch here, as i wanted something malaysian to eat – rice dish, noodle dish, anything of the same sort!

DSC00163

i was craving for a rice dish, but i can’t help myself ordering this when i saw it on the menu : ‘penang fried kuey teow’. i LOVE kuey teow! for the record, i would say that this kuey teow meets my palate and i find it quite tasty. however, i knew my beloved penang boy mr. khairul would cringe even at the SIGHT of the plate, let alone the taste!

it’s really NOT like penang char kuey teow (i KNOW) – the taste is slightly off yet still yummy, and the texture is different, but this is satisfactory nevertheless. just got to remind myself not to suggest this dish to that penang boy! hihi

DSC00160

this is for the boys : two plates of ‘yong chow fried rice’. you can never go wrong with yong chow fried rice because it’s such a deliciously simple dish. unless you screw it up with too much salt! this one is a little bit salty than i would like, but it’s still tasty. the portion is acceptable, and it’s served with slices of cucumbe and cut up veggies, a few praws and egg sunny side up. not bad.

DSC00161

my youngest sister picked a rice dish too. this is ‘myNEWS fried rice’ – a spicier fried rice served with fried chicken wings, sambal and egg sunny side up. another really simple dish and equally tasty. this can easily satisfy any hungry yuppies on their rushed lunch hour!

DSC00155

other than local delicacies like paprik rice, asam laksa or singapore beehoon, myNEWScafe also has western dishes such as chicken chop and lamb cutlets – and they’re so cheap! i will definitely try that next!

DSC00153

a rack filled with magazines at the back

DSC00152

a wide mirror to give an illusion of space

DSC00164

nice comic-book art corner here in myNEWScafe

my sister said this place is packed during lunch time because it sells local food that is comparitively cheap, and fairly delicious. kalau dah takde idea mane nak makan kat OU, do try!

Theobrama Chocolate : KL’s First Choc Cafe?

this franchise from australia has been around in KL for quite some time, but this was the first time that i tried it. went with the young couples – my newly wedded sis syidot and her husband nash, and azi with her fiance faiz.

found out that ‘theobrama chocolate’ is KL’s first chocolate cafe, offering (among others) choc fondue – melted chocolate served in a pot surrounded by cut-up fresh fruits especially strawberry or banana to be dip in the choc, usually shared.

ah, the very thought of it!

‘theobrama cacao’ is also a small cocoa tree, and its seeds are used to make cocoa powder and chocolate.

DSC00143

i tried this safe yet classic choice of ‘belgian waffle with ice-cream’. what can i say? waffle? GOOD. strawberry? GOOD. ice-cream? GOOD. chocolate sauce? GOOD! i love the texture of the waffle – like bahulu but not quite. the strawberry fresh and the rest is history down my tummy! i just wish i had TWO scoops of ice-cream instead of just one!

DSC00142

* * *

DSC00137

DSC00138

my future bro-in-law faiz tried something really quirky that i first heard only in the movie ‘chocolat’ starring johnny depp and juliet binoche. love that movie! anyways, he tried the ‘chilli hot chocolate’. yes, it’s not a typo – CHILLI hot choc! chilli powder is literally sprinkled on top of the hot choc surface. fascinating! fascinating that someone is crazy enough to try this!

DSC00141

he said he could really feel the pang of the chilli powder in between sips of hot choc!

* * *

DSC00136

my younger sisters syidot and azot went a little romantic and shared this tall cup of ice-blended choc with yummy stuff in it. i’m not so sure. but it sure looks yummy! especially with the hardened chocolate trail decorated on the inside of the glass. yum!

* * *

from left : nash, syida, faiz & azi

it was just me and kazim (my other two boys khaleef and kahfi were with my in-laws) and these four cwazee lovewombats.

at times i just kept quiet watching them pokpek and it’s just blissful. me in malaysia. makan-makan. with my sisters. and my brothers-in-law. just hangin out. sweet as the dessert we were eating…

DXB-KUL : In-Flight Movie I Watched

we flew back to malaysia in the massive emirates airbus a380. now i don’t know much about planes, but in layman’s term, this is a double-deck airplane with a LOT of lavatory and best of all, a huge tv screen for us economy class folks!

now that’s the way to enjoy in-flight entertainment!

i only caught two movies in the 6-7 hour flight from dubai to malaysia. i’ve wanted to watch these two movies since forever! ‘albert nobbs’ because glenn close was nominated for best actress in the last academy awards; and ‘the best exotic marigold hotel’ because the cast comprise of the best veteran acts in brit silver screen.

* * *

oh my, can you even recognize the pretty glenn close in this man-butler get-up?

yes, in this riveting drama ‘albert nobbs’, glenn close plays ‘albert nobbs’ – a woman who disguises herself as a man to escape poverty, to be independent, and to work as a butler in a high-class hotel in the late 19th century ireland. an encounter with a handsome painter may open doors to her long-kept secret…

glenn close is so convincing as this soft-spoken man who always kept to himself, and at the same time a very well-mannered and dependable butler in this posh hotel. it’s almost heartbreaking to see albert nobbs alone in his/her room, quietly counting the tip of the day to see if it’s finally enough to realize his/her dream in owning a shop of his/her own.

when a handsome painter was hired to fix the hotel, he was asked to stay the night with albert – and so begins a whole new chapter in the life of albert nobbs…

a moving drama about going againts all odds, to realize a dream despite whatever shorcomings we may have.

* * *

i LOVE this movie. and it’s no wonder – the director of this delightful movie was also responsible for my other favorite movie of all time, ‘shakespeare in love’. no wonder the script is witty, the casts are wonderfully engaging and the story itself is magical.

a group of english veterans decided to take a holiday at this so-called ‘best exotic marigold hotel’ which claims to have top-class facilities and all that marketing catch-phrases. when they arrived, things are NOT quite as advertised, but the old folks stayed on, and experiences life in the colorful and exotic india. in fact, the old ‘hotel’ seemed to have its own charm…

‘the best exotic marigold hotel’ is never boring because each veteran have their own story to tell, their own adventure to run, their concerns and problems – all which is interesting, touching, amusing and a joy to watch. sometimes funny, sometimes sad, and mostly an eye-opener – perhaps, when we get older, we’ll be facing the same challenges!

dev patel (of slumdog millionaire) plays the young manager who often seems a little klutzy as he strives so hard to please his hotel guests and to convince them that ‘things always turn out right in the end, and if it didn’t, it’s not yet the end.’ he gets some of the best one-liners, and obviously the comic relief. he’s definitely a darling in this movie!

this is highly recommended movie, for the young and the young at heart. it’s about hope and facing your fears, about letting go and second chances – and also to remind all of us that old folks still have a little bit of romance in them.

* * *

though ‘albert nobbs’ is a fine movie, but it’s depressing to be watched in an enclossed space haha because you can’t escape to get a scoop of ice-cream or opening to window to get some fresh air – yes, it’s THAT kind of movie.

that’s exactly why i was so glad i watched ‘the best exotic marigold hotel’ next, which gives hope on life as you reach that golden age, that life’s adventure doesn’t end when you notice one strand of uban, and it’s just such a wonderfully funny movie to watch.

Lamb Chops @ Tony Roma’s : Azi’s Treat!

my sisters are on a diet but obviously i ruined it by coming over demanding a lot of makan-makan time! haha. and this will be a regular thing while i’m back in malaysia, people!

as promised, my youngest sister treated me to a steak lunch at tony roma’s. yay! thanks azi!

there are tony roma’s branches in dubai, but i had never been to one. i heard the beef ribs dish is their specialty, and their lamb chops are not bad either – so i went in high anticipation, and an empty tummy waiting to be filled with juicy, meaty lamb fat and chunks!

yes i said it – FATty chunks – and i’m not even gonna feel guilty about it!

DSC00095

i’m not that picky when it comes to lamb chops – a good lamb chop needs to be tender, juicy, medium well-done, and well-marinated without being too salty. the lamb chops at tony roma’s fit the bill. it’s simply delicious and i enjoyed every bite. the portion is huge too – four pieces of lamb chops! yay!

it comes with two complimentary side dishes of our choice – from the classic mashed potatoes or coleslaw to fresh steamed veggies or baked potatoes.

DSC00102

i picked mashed potatoes – slightly on the rough side, meaning it’s not entirely mashed. there’s lump and even bits of potato skin. sedap tu sedap, and some might like it like that, but i like my mashed potato silky smooth and without lumps!

i simply LOVE coleslaw, and i always make my own. though i find the coleslaw at tony roma’s slightly on the sweet side, but i find it very tasty! deliciously cool and complements my yummy bits of lamb chops.

DSC00110

* * *

DSC00103

my sisters shared this awesome steakhouse burger – one of the popular burger choices in tony roma’s. it’s a grilled beef burger topped with cheese and beef bacon.

it looks SO inviting because i’m a fan of cheeseburgers, but i gotta concentrate my palate solely on my lambchops. no thanks, girls!

DSC00104

* * *

DSC00098

the wombats also shared this surprisingly delicious starter called ‘steak & wild mushroom flatbread’.

it’s simply this crispy flatbread topped with grilled beef tenderloin, melted cheese, crumbled bleu cheese, wild mushrooms, red peppers, chives and creamy horseradish sauce. looking at it, you’d think it’s just a type of thin-crusted pizza of some sort – but it’s really a whole dish on its own. like i said – surprisingly delicious!

DSC00114

also, i usually don’t like it if the toppings seemed more than the bread – tak balance – but a bite proves me wrong – the toppings and the flatbread go together well in acceptable ratio. haha.

i would order this again if i stopped by for a snack!

* * *

DSC00116

the next pasangan raja sehari

my future bro-in-law faiz joined us about half an hour later, ordering a big plate of ‘caesar salad’. yes, ALSO on a diet. maklumla, they’re getting married in december!

DSC00118

overall, the food at tony roma’s is not disappointing at all, and really delicious with huge portion too, which is always an extra. the place is comfy and family friendly. however, it looks bare though without much decor as compared to other similar-themed restaurants like TGIF or chillis, but good food makes up to that.

* * *

to my baby sis azi, thank you so much for this deliciously fatty juicy treat of lamb chops! again, i’m NOT feeling guilty at all! haha.

that night, her fiance faiz pulak belanja the famous ‘nasi lemak bumbung’ which was so tasty too. thanks faiz! moga bertambah-tambah rezeki korang bila dah sah suami isteri nanti sebab dengan murah hati belanja kakak korang yang comel ni hihi. ok, where to next?

Dino LIVE @ Dubai Festival City : The Good & The Bad

khaleef is a dinosaur freak now, including little kazim who likes to carry a miniature t-rex all around, and kahfi too.

so we definitely wanted to take khaleef to the ‘dino LIVE’ exhibition in dubai festival city for him to go back in time and find out what the dinosaur really look like LIVE since the dino exhibits here are said to be life-size – even the biggest dinosaur of all – the bracchiosaurus!

fun facts on ‘dino LIVE’ at dubai festival city

  1. according to sources on the net, ‘dino live’ is the world’s largest dinosaur exhibition
  2. the exhibition consists of more than 30 life-sized animated dinosaurs – up to 20m in length and 6m in height
  3. these animatronic dinos emit actual dinosaur sounds, and also move their heads and jaws, and swish their tails
  4. ext to each dinosaur, there is a 42-inch screen which displays relevant information about this dinosaur
  5. there’s an educational movie and a 3D cinema, where children of all ages can learn and experience what it was like to live among the dinosaurs
  6. the exhibition is divided into a ‘Dinosaur zone’, a ‘Fossil Zone’, ‘Educational Zone’ and a ‘3D cinema’.

* * *

my excited little paleontologists!

while i find the excitement of my boys in seeing the dinosaurs very rewarding, i must give my opinion on what I DON’T LIKE about dino LIVE :

  1. while the dinosaurs ARE life-sized, the setting and display of all the exhibits are amaturish. mr. khairul even went as far as saying it’s like a high-school project. why? the dinosaurs are all placed one after another in boxy enclosure, and in a haphazard manner without knowing which dino or era comes first. motorshow pun lagi lawa cara diorang display kereta! haha
  2. they should’ve put a one-way path that started accordingly (like in ikea, where we would be ‘inclined’ to cover each ‘room’ as we walk since we’re following a one-way path that doesn’t have a criss-cross to another section) to make it easier to navigate through
  3. they should have archways to tell us that we’re leaving a certain era like ‘triassic’, and about to enter another era ‘jurassic’, which will make it easier for kids to know which group of dinos live in the same era; or at least color coded the display panel or names so that it’s immediately recognizable
  4. the TV that supposed to display information about the dinosaur is TOO HIGH UP which makes it difficult for young kids to read, thus they’re discouraged to learn more about the dino they’re seeing
  5. other than the tv, the NAME of the dinosaur should be displayed boldly in front of the dinosaur
  6. there’s no pamphlet with information given to visitors to enhance their experience in dino LIVE
  7. entrance fee is 50dhs which include popcorn – but it’s salty popcorn without caramel. aku nak yang caramel! kedekut lah!
  8. the so-called ‘educational movie’ IS educational, but i’m sorry to say that the movie they show seemed as old as the dinosaurs themselves! it’s like an old documentary taken from the 1970’s! hello? with 50dhs that we pay, can you give the kids the latest documentary on dinos from highly-acclaimed sourse like nat geo?
  9. the gift-shop is a joke. should have more dino LIVE merchandise – enough to make it a lot cooler that it already is to the kids. no dino LIVE t-shirts. no books. not even a freaking fridge magnets

mr. khairul with the samseng of dinosaurs – the mighty t-rex

the biggest of them all – the bracchiosaurus with khaleef

now to be fair, there are a few things that I DO LIKE about dino LIVE :

  1. khaleef and kahfi were screaming excitedly as they move to each dinosaur, which is more than enough to make mr. khairul feel less of a fool to spend 50dhs each this hihi it was a joy watching khaleef identfying each dino without even looking at the TV (sebab tv pun tinggi sangat kan, tak nampak!)
  2. the life-sized dinosaurs are a real sight – standing majestic over us, especially the t-rex and the biggest of ‘em all the brachiosaurus – and being a highly imaginative person, i was transported back in time where i wandered among these giant lizards to a time before time – it was amazing
  3. to see how small we are compared to a dinosaur – standing side by side like in the pictures above – mr. khairul with t-rex, and little khaleef with the gigantic leaf-eating brachiosaurus
  4. for really young ones like kazim, seeing these dinos emitting growls and roars, while movie its head or swishing its tail is enough to make their eyes wide in wonderment and awe – kazim was very scared and cautious at first, tagging along close behing his ateh (my sis-in-law) but soon became very curious and interested later on
  5. while the setting of the whole dino LIVE could be improved, i kind off like the individual setting of the dino – with the trees, rocks and stones and the plants – looks quite nice
  6. also, when we went, we were THE ONLY ONES THERE! so we felt like VIP – konon-konon the dino LIVE is purposely closed just for us haha i don’t worry about kazim getting lost in the crowd. khaleef and kahfi roamed freely running around to see the dinosaurs!

kazim! don’t be scared, they’re fake! hihi

dino bones pun ade!

so – if you have better ways to spend 50dhs in this dubai summer sale, go ahead. you’re not losing anything! however, if your kid absolutely LOVE dinosaurs, and you have more than 50dhs to burn, this might be a memorable ‘trip’ for your kid during this school holiday.

your call!

the dino LIVE show is running now at dubai festival city, the top floor near the cinema.

check out these postings too!
